Daily Nonpareil Council Bluffs IA April 26th, 2004 Thomas Gardner Jr., 80, of Carter Lake died April 24 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital. He was born Nov. 16, 1923, in Beebeetown to Thomas and Clara (Handbury) Gardner Sr. He previously lived in Omaha and Beebeetown, moving to Carter Lake 20 years ago. He was a 1941 graduate of Neola High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a watch repairman for Brandeis Department Store for 40 years, retiring in 1983. He was a life member of Carter Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9661, and a member of Neola American Legion Post No. 330. Mr. Gardner was preceded in death by his wife, Anita Gardner, on Sept. 7, 2003. He was also preceded by parents; grandson, Richard W. Naylor Jr. in 1973; and three sisters. Survivors include two daughters, Linda Peters and husband, Harold, of Council Bluffs and Peggy Stanek and husband, Frank, of Omaha; one son, Tom Gardner and wife, Linda, of Council Bluffs; five grandchildren, Thomas M. Gardner, Nicholas J. Gardner, Traci L. Stanek, Michael F. Stanek and Lori E. White.; two great-grandchildren, Ryan Gardner and Brittany Gardner; stepdaughter, Cindy Phillip and husband, Rob, of Michigan; three sisters, Opal Hansen and Emma Evans, both of Council Bluffs, and Evelyn Dayhuff of Logan; one brother, Dean Gardner and wife, Geraldine, of Neola. Visitation with the family will be Tuesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Roger Prescott officiating. Burial will be in Grange Cemetery, Honey Creek, with military rites by American Legion Post No. 2 and a lunch following at American Legion Post No. 2. Memorials may be offered to the family.
