    2. Daily Nonpareil Council Bluffs IA Nov 16th, 2004 FLORENCE, Ky. - Doris (Whannell) McCurley, 92, formerly of Council Bluffs, died Nov. 10 in Florence, Ky. She was born July 25, 1912, in Toronto, Ontario, the first of five children. Her parents, Hugh Whannell and Agnes (Chalmers) Whannell, were both Scottish immigrants. Doris graduated from Missouri Valley High School in 1931. She attended college in Cedar Falls before beginning her teaching career. Her earliest teaching assignments were in Iowa's rural one-room schools. She ended her career in the Council Bluffs public schools as a kindergarten teacher. Doris married Robert McCurley in 1936, and they farmed north of Minden. They had three children, Hugh McCurley, Roger McCurley, and Amy (McCurley) Baluchi. The family moved to Council Bluffs in 1953 and remained there until retirement. They were both active members of Grace Presbyterian Church in Council Bluffs. Doris is survived by her husband of 68 years, Bob McCurley; her two sons, Hugh and Roger; her sister Bette Grant; two brothers, Don Whannell and Paul Whannell; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Memorial donations may be sent to Faith Community United Methodist Church, 4310 Richardson Road, Independence, KY 41051.
