Daily Nonpareil Council Bluffs IA May 19th, 2004 Mary M. (Newland) Swanson, 86, of Neola died May 17 at Indian Hills Nursing Center. Advertisement She was born May 2, 1918, in Hot Springs, S.D., to Elmus and Susan (Gresh) Bullard. She lived in Neola since 1943. She graduated from high school. She was a nurse's aide at Community Hospital in Missouri Valley and Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs. She also worked at Sears Roebuck & Co. in the Catalog Department taking phone orders. She was a member of St. Patrick's Church in Neola and its Altar & Rosary Society, Neola Senior Citizen Center and Neola American Legion Post No. 330 Ladies Auxiliary. Mrs. Swanson was preceded in death by her husbands, Marvin Newland, Feb. 7, 1962, and Glen Swanson, Dec. 4, 1974, and her grandson, Eric Benning. Survivors include daughters, JoAnn Schwery and husband, Richard, of Panama, Betty Ruckman and husband, George, of Compton, Ark., Abbie Benning of Neola and Colleen Lujan and husband, Frank, of The Colony, Texas; 22 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson. Visitation with the family will be Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. with Rosary Recitation at 7 p.m. at St. Patrick's Church in Neola. Funeral Mass will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church, Neola, with the Rev. Raphael Masabakhwa officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Neola with a luncheon to follow in the Parish Hall. Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be offered to Alegent Health Hospice or St. Patrick's Church.
