His father and uncle Clem Bowersox opened the Boy's Store and Dean worked there after school at the age of nine. He graduated from the Dunlap High School in 1925. He attended Graceland College in Lamoni for one year. Dean decided to go to California in May of 1928, on his way he stopped in Lamoni to see his girlfriend Josephine Kopp. They were married on June 1, 1928. After an extended honeymoon in California, the couple returned to Dunlap in October of 1928 and Dean started working for Chauncy Buick in Dunlap. The dealership changed to McKenny and Seabury. From 1943 to 1949, Dean owned and operated his own body shop where the Heller Implement Dealership is located. He went back to work for McKenny and Seabury until 1975. From 1975 to 1987 he worked for Heffernan and Nauroth. He retired briefly and then worked for Gordon Brothers in Dow City. Dean died Wednesday, May 26, 2004 at Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center attaining the age of 96 years and five months. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife; son, John Jack Stewart; two daughters, Jerriann Noe and Betty Jodine; brothers, Donald, Paul and Lloyd Stewart; sisters, Helen Hunter and Ruth Luvaas. He is survived by his daughter, Patsy Gray of Dunlap; sister, Bonita Firestine of Hayward, Calif.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. Memorial services were held at Followers of Christ Church in Woodbine Friday, May 28, 2004 at 11 a.m. with Elders Royl Roden and Danny Mefferd officiating. Musician was Lou Waite. Vocalist was Cyrila Roberts and selections included "Face to Face" and "It Is Well With My Soul." Final resting place was Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Dunlap.
