She was born July 25, 1918 in Nenzel, Neb., to Anton and Cecilia Lorenz Schaefer being the 7th of 8 children. She attended schools in Dunlap, Iowa and graduated in 1936. She was a licensed beautician. She later moved to Stockton, Utah, where she began working for the Union Pacific Railroad as a telegrapher. While working there. she met and married Kermit Stevens Hatch in Tooele, Utah. on April 29, 1944. She drove the neighborhood children to school for the Millard County School District transporting them to both Delta, Utah, to school and then later to Milford, Utah, for many years. Upon the death of her husband in 1963, she returned to work for the UPRR as a General Clerk and in 1964 working in Milford and Delta, Utah, Caliente, Nev., and Yermo, Calif. She retired on June 15, 1981. She enjoyed gardening and her grandchildren. She was a active member of the Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kermit; a grandson, Robbie Allen Dean; a son-in-law, Dayne Shumway; and brothers, Cletus, Paul, Alphonse and Jake Henrie Schaefer. She is survived by her children, Steven Lynn and Charlotte Hatch of Salina, Utah, Lois Shumway of Blanding, Utah, Rita and Robert Dean of Beaver, Utah, Lyle and Partner Gary Hatch of Fresno, Calif., JoEllen and Jim Alcorn of North Fork, Calif., and Roger and Gillian Hatch of Milford, Utah. She has 16 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren; brother, Jim Schaefer of Ephrata, Wash.; sisters, Matilda Decker of Dover, Del., and Loretta Killan of Watsonville, Calif. Funeral Mass was held on Friday, May 14, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Milford, Utah.
