Laverne was born November 3, 1920, to Ted and Cora E. (Goodrich) Krueger in Schleswig, Iowa. Laverne worked at Cutty's Meat Packing Plant in Sioux City, during WWII. She cleaned motels in Sioux City including the Biltmore Hotel. On October 10, 1967, Laverne married Leo Nelson and became the mother to Gordon, Neil, Ella and Marty. The couple operated the El & N Motel in Dunlap. Laverne was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Dunlap. She was also a member of ELCA women's group and the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed going to church and the nursing home to visit people. She devoted her life to Leo and the kids. Laverne was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leo Nelson; and a grandson, Adam Kroll. She is survived by four children, Gordon Lembke and his wife Colleen of Sheffield, Iowa, Neil Lembke and his wife Kelly of Dow City, Iowa, Ella Malone of Dunlap, Iowa, and Marty Nelson and his wife Veronica of Dunlap, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; sister, Rubye Barthel of Sioux City, Iowa; three sisters-in-law, Wilma Clement and Della Fouts both of Dunlap, Iowa and Shirley Nelson of Woodbine, Iowa, and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Thursday morning, March 22, 2007, at St. John Lutheran Church in Dunlap, Iowa at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Carla Ingebretsen officiating. Musician was Alice Keith. Congregational hymns were "God Will Take Care of You," and "Softly and Tenderly." The recorded selection was "Eagle When She Flies." Interment was made at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Dunlap. Pallbearers were Brent Nelson, Levi Malone, Wyatt Malone, Jon Lembke, Jeremy Lembke, Phillip Lembke, Robert Greene. Fouts Funeral Home of Dunlap was in charge of arrangements.
