The body was cremated and he will be buried in the Logan Cemetery in Logan at the convenience of the family. Friends may pay their respects March 8 from 6 to 7 p.m. .at the Harris Funeral Home in Gilmore City where a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Harris Funeral Home of Gilmore City is in charge of the arrangements. Bill was born June 19, 1920 in Logan, the son of Lee and Blanche Shannon. He attended the Logan Schools graduating in 1938. Bill attended Tabor Junior College from 1939-1941 and graduated from Parson College in 1943 with a math and science major. He attended the U. S. Naval Midshipmen School at Notre Dame and was commissioned an Ensign USNR in Sept. of 1943. He was trained in gunning and spent World War II as a liaison officer with the 29th Division of 6th Division. He landed on Omaha Beach with the infantry on D-Day and directed naval gunfire in support of the assaulting troops. After the beachhead was established he left for the South Pacific and landed with the assault infantry in the Philippines. After World War II he entered the teaching profession. Bill taught at Epworth High School, was principal at Oakland Nebraska High School and acting principal at Bartlett and for 33 and a half years was a classroom teacher at Gilmore City Bradgate Community High School. Through the years he taught algebra, geometry, chemistry, physics, biology and general science. Survivors include a niece, Mary Ann Lewis of Mondamin. Preceding him in death were brothers Albert, Harold and Max. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
