Sproul, 81, Missouri Valley, died March 4 at Alegent Health Mercy Hospital, Council Bluffs. James was born Apr. 13, 1925 in California Junction to Harold Bruce and Dorothy Ruth (Haffley) Sproul. Jim was raised in Iowa and South Dakota and attended Geddes High School in Geddes, S.D., graduating in 1943. Jim joined the U.S. Army July 21, 1943, and saw duty during World War II in the Pacific Theater in New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan. He was part of the recovery mission at Hiroshima in post-war Japan. He was honorably discharged Jan. 30, 1946. He remained in contact with members of the 41st Infantry Division throughout his life. Jim married Gwendolyn (Gwen) Harding, March 4, 1946. They lived in Iowa, South Dakota, Colorado and Oregon before settling in Washington, near Seattle. Jim worked for the Boeing Co. for many years and was a member of the team that built the first 747 Jumbo Jet. Jim and Gwen loved to camp and together with their family, spent many fun-! filled years enjoying the outdoors. Son Maurice (Mick) was born in 1947, two daughters joined the family, Marilee (Mary) in 1958 and Charlotte in 1963. Jim lost Gwen, Dec. 22, 1987. He married Doris Sproul, Feb. 14, 1992 and spent his remaining years happily in Missouri Valley, enjoying traveling and the friendship of many old and new friends. Jim lost his battle with cancer, March 4, 2007. James was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Gwendolyn. Survivors include: his wife, Doris Sproul, Missouri Valley; son, Mick Sproul, Kirkland, Wash.; daughters, Mary Noble and her husband, Greg, Kirkland, Wash.; Charlotte Hoss and her husband, Bart, Mondamin; stepson, Tim Sproul and his wife, Cindy, Missouri valley; grandchildren, Katelyn, Laura, Zachary, Brooke, Ericka, Jeremy and Derek; sister, Shirley Mae Gray, Springfield, Ore.; cousins, nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., today (Friday, March 9), at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Missouri Valley, Rev. Fr. ! Bob Harris, celebrant. Musician will be Lyle Waterhouse. Casket Bearers will be: Bret Hoss, Chris Johnson, Bart and Zachary Hoss, Al Bock, John (Bud) Barrett, Vernon Spilker, Donald Bertelsen, and Jerry Marshall. Military Honors will be performed at the church by Julius F. Muller Post No. 337, American Legion, Missouri Valley. The family would like to invite everyone to a time of lunch and fellowship at the church following the services. Interment will be later in Cedar lawns Cemetery, Redmond, Wash. Hennessey-Aman Funeral Home, Missouri Valley, is in charge of arrangements.
