Helen graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1946. She took college courses from Iowa State Teachers' College, Drake University and Iowa Western Community College. Helen married Louis Stolz on June 3, 1947, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dunlap, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Earling and Defiance areas for 15 years. Helen also taught school in Shelby County Country Schools, St. Joseph School in Earling and also sold Avon products. In 1962, Helen started helping Louis at Stolz DX Service and was also a bookkeeper at Egan Grain and Feed in Dunlap, World Wide Meats and Dialoc Corp in Denison, Leaders Equipment Company, Heller's Town and Country and the Gold Slipper in Dunlap. Helen and Louis celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1997. Helen was a member of St. Patrick's Altar Society and Catholic Daughters, the Parish Council, Finance Council, and Harrison County Catholic Council. She was a director and treasurer of the Library Board, treasurer of the Golf Club, Care Center Auxiliary and the Variance Board. Helen enjoyed her family, friends, neighbors, and her church. She also enjoyed golfing, bowling, cards and traveling. Helen died Sunday, March 18, 2007, at the Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center in Dunlap, Iowa attaining the age of 78 years, 10 months, and 11 days. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Art and Bob Assmann; sister, Genevieve Schwery; brother-in-law, Al Tremel; and sister-in-law Mary Jane Assmann.
