Author: cecgbm Surnames: Bolter, Miller, Hatfield Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.iowa.counties.harrison/4221/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello All, Ancestry apparently has been adding IA databases, in the census section of their databases they have added many of the IA State census records - and they have uploaded many of the actual images (which is always nice!). While searching for Ben and/or Noah Bolter I found: 1885 - Clay, Harrison Co., IA - Roll:197/ Ln21/Fam 34/Pg 153 - Noah M. Bolter age 23, b. MI; Nancy age 16, b. IL; and Emma J. age 1, b. Harrison Co., IA. NOTE: Prob. mother Celia Jane listed just above married to a Wm Miller! 1885 - Jefferson, Harrison Co., IA - Roll:197/ Ln9/Fam 84/Pg 351 - Noah H. Bolter age 22, b. MI; Nancy M. age 15, b. IL; and Emma J. age 0, b. IA. 1885 Jefferson, Harrison Co., IA - Roll: 197; Ln: 30, Fam: 221, Pg 374 - Benjamin Bolter age 26, b. MI, sngl - Living w/ Stephenson Family - prob. a farmer worker. Ben and Noah were the sons of Alexander and Celia Jane Bolter. Alexander died in the late 1870s, Celia Jane was living in the poor farm in 1880 - per the Federal census. The time between 1880 and 1895 (Celia Jane's next census appearance), we know little or nothing about her. We do assume that she died before 1900 (no record of her death has been found to date). Anyway, while looking at one of Noah's 1885c listings (he was listed twice) - I found a Celia J. MILLER listed just above him on his Clay Twp. census - that Celia J. was the right age to be my Celia Jane, and was born in the right birth state for my Celia Jane - OH! I know that this is not proof! But, I do TRULY believe this has to be my Celia Jane! 1885 - Clay, Harrison Co., IA - Roll: 197/ Ln 19-20/Fam 34/Pg 153 - Wm Miller age 54, b. NY; and Celia J. Miller age 59, b. OH. NOTE: Listed just above Noah! I figure that she and Wm Miller married bet 1880-1885. I know that Celia was listed on the 1895 IA census w/ Ben & Sarah - as a widow - and as a Bolter (Botler - per ancestry's transcript): 1895 undated - IA State Census: Douglas Twp., Harrison Co. - Bk 1, Vol 339/ Roll 159: Benjamin BOTLER [Bolter] age 34, b. MI; Sarah age 29 b. Harrison Co., IA; Celia age 73 b. OH; Flossie age 6, b. Harrison Co., IA; Rosie age 4, b. Harrison Co., IA; and Georgia age 1, b. Harrison Co., IA. Still, that doesn't mean that she no longer went by Miller - it could have been that Ben or Sarah told the census taker that Celia was Ben's mother - so the census taker assumed she was a Bolter and 'ditto-ed' her last name as Bolter! This opens up all sorts of research avenues on my Celia Jane! Is there a marriage record out there? If so, could we FINALLY have the proof we need to identify - with complete accuracy - her parents names! THAT WOULD BE BIG! The Harrison Co. GenWeb site does not have a marriage for her listed - perhaps it was missed - or perhaps Celia and Wm were married in a neighboring county. There ARE several references to a William Miller on their site - one died too early to be this one - they others could be good leads! There isn't enough info on the site to know! However, there is a Mrs. William Miller that died in 1900! Perhaps Mrs. Celia Jane Miller??? Any help on this info would be greatly appreciated! I live in MI and it is hard to find what I need on line! Are there any Miller researchers out there that could help me with identifying the Wm that married Celia J.? Thanks so much!
