She was raised in the Woodbine area and graduated from Woodbine High School. She furthered her education by taking the Normal Training and teaching in country schools. She continued her learning process by taking additional classes at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake. Alter some years of teaching, Betty changed jobs and began working in the banking industry. She worked at 1st National Bank in San Francisco, Calif., and then in Omaha, Neb., for more than 20 years. In the mid 1980s Betty moved to Dunlap. Betty was a member of the Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She was a volunteer with the American Cancer Society drives and also collected money for the American Heart Association. Betty attended TOPS meetings and she enjoyed reading and working crossword puzzles. She was an avid sports fan and loved to follow the high school and college athletic events. Betty died Thursday, September 23, 2004 at the Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center in Dunlap attaining the age of 83 years, 11 months, and seven days. Preceding her in death were her parents; two brothers, Warren and Lawrence; and two sisters, Lila Jackson and Neva Austin. She is survived by two sisters, Enid Brown of Escondido, Calif., and Irene Cleveland of Woodbine; brother-in-law, Kenneth Austin of Dunlap; sister-in-law, Ruth Boe of Dunlap; and many nieces, nephews and other family, friends, and neighbors. Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church in Dunlap Monday afternoon, September 27, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Judy Deweber officiating. Musician was Barb Amsberry and vocalist was Jay Randall who sang "Amazing Grace" and "In The Garden." Interment was made at Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Dunlap. Pallbearers were Dave Austin, Nick Cleveland, Steve Hamblen, Bob Jackson, Dan Jackson, Bob Steele. Funeral arrangements were handled by Fouts Funeral Home in Dunlap.
