He was the fourth of five children. In 1936, Giles' family moved to Dunlap. He attended St. Joseph School and graduated in 1946. Giles proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean War. He was also stationed at Treasure Island N.S., California having attained the rank of Sergeant. October 3, 1953, Giles married Ruth Mitchell in Dunlap, Iowa. The couple was blessed with eight children. The couple farmed west and north of Dunlap and then moved to town in 1962. Giles then started working for IBP in Denison and in 1966 he joined the USDA as a federal meat inspector. He retired after 23 years of services. Giles raised purebred Simmentals with his sons, John and Jim for 30 years. Giles was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Parish Council, the building committee for the Parish Center, and the! Knights of Columbus. He was also a 50-year member of the American Legion Post #224. Giles served as mayor of Dunlap for six years as well. Giles died on Saturday, March 31, 2007, at his home in Dunlap, Iowa, attaining the age of 78 years, one month, and 20 days. Giles was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Jane Bolton; two brothers, John and Gene Lacey; son, Michael; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Frank and Velma Mitchell; sister-in-law, Betty Hawn and great grandson, Riley Beeck. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Lacey of Dunlap, Iowa; three sons, Steve Lacey and his wife Deb, John Lacey all of Dunlap, Iowa, Jim Lacey of Soldier, Iowa; four daughters, Susan Lacey of Tampa, Fla., Kris Lacey of Omaha, Neb., Jean and her husband Dean Assmann of Alta, Iowa, Patricia and her husband John Reisz of Bellevue, Neb.; 10 grandchildren; one great grandchild; sister, Katie and her husband Charlie Lee of Manassas, Va.; brother-in-law, Jack Hawn of Dunlap, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends. Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dunlap, Iowa, Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Paul Strittmatter, SJ, as celebrant. Music was provided by Marilyn Grote who accompanied Jerry Baldwi! n for "Amazing Grace," "How Great Thou Art" and "On Eagle's Wings." Interment was made at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Dunlap. American Legion Post #224 provided military graveside rites. Pallbearers were Steve Lacey, John Lacey, Jim Lacey, John Reisz, Dean Assmann, Jacob Melby. Honorary pallbearers were Jack Hawn, Vernon Hawn, Mike Houston, Joe Lipichok, Bob Neilsen, Eddie Smith, John W. Smith, Bob Weber. Fouts Funeral Home in Dunlap was in charge of the arrangements.
