Surnames: Gleason, Holbrook, Harris Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/0k.2ADE/4106 Message Board Post: The Missouri Valley Times, Oct. 23, 1885 At his home in Dunlap, Ia., at 1 p.m., October 17, 1885, of typhoid fever, Henry W. Gleason, aged 45 years. The deceased was born in Allegheny county, N.Y., in 1840. he came west in '66, settling in Harrison county Iowa, and has continued to be a resident thereof ever since. He was one of the most genial, well-hearted and companionable men never making an acquaintance without making a lifetime frined. Everybody loved him. The power of making and retaining friends with him, was perfectly natural -- perhaps the strongest characteristic he possessed flowing spontaneously from a pure hearrt, combined with a lively amiable dispostion, ready wit and sympathetic feelings toward his fellow men. His friends and admirers were all over the country, and the news of his death cast such a feeling of universal gloom and sadness as is very seldom felt under similiar circumstances. In his death, everybody feels as if he had sustained a loss: and as the intelligence was conveyed from ! friend to friend it seemed as if it could not be. But we must all submit to the inevitable and should strive to be as well prepared as he. He was a professor of Christianity, and too true and noble to be less than deeply in earnest, while his daily walk and life gave the stamp of sincerety to his professious. For such as he the "pearly gates" must ever stand ajar, and his family and friends, whose lives are in keeping with divine precepts, may hold fast to the blessed assurance of a bright reunion over there. --Courier Marcellus Holbrook and D. M. Harris, of Missouri Valley, attended the funeral of Mr. Gleason and report it to be the largest ever seen in the ocunty. Respectfully submitted for other researchers.
