She was 63 years old. It was a beautiful day outside Monday. Mrs. Lapke went for a walk at Pleasant View Park during her lunch hour when she apparently collapsed. Her body was discovered by another person who was walking at the park not long after she was stricken. The AEA 13 crisis management team lended assistance in preparing announcements and providing grief counseling to Boyer Valley students and staff. When requested by teachers, AEA counselors went into the classrooms Tuesday to read announcements and to answer any questions. School administrators also planned to send a memo home Tuesday advising parents on how to help their children deal with Mrs. Lapke's passing. "She was a vibrant person going out to enjoy a beautiful day," said School Superintendent Debra Johnsen. "It's a terrible loss to all of us." Johnsen said Mary Ann was known for statements like "eat healthy" and "go vote." "That's what she would be telling us today since it's election day," Johnsen added. "We're going to sorely miss her; she touched a lot of lives," Johnsen said. "She was committed to help the kids, not only with their medical needs, but also their emotional needs and social needs." And to the school staff as well. "She was an inspiration to all of us," Johnsen said. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Mary Ann Lapke ©The Dunlap Reporter November 09, 2006 Mary Ann (Gross) Lapke was born January 30, 1943, to Alban and Lavina (Kaufmann) Gross in Harlan, Iowa.
