Wettengel, Sr. ©Daily Nonpareil 11/18/2006 Paul J. Wettengel, Sr, age 81, of Council Bluffs, passed away November 15, 2006 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital. Paul was born January 28, 1925 in Dunlap, Iowa, to the late George and Lola (Hanigan) Wettengel. He graduated from Dunlap St. Joseph High School in 1943 and served our country in the US Navy during WWII. After his return from the service, Paul married Patricia Lyman on February 12, 1947 and to this union 17 children were born. Paul worked for Metz Baking Co. in Denison from 1949-1961 and moved to Council Bluffs that same year. He worked for Griffin Pipe from 1966-1988 and was the owner of Wettengel Enterprises from 1967-1992. Paul was a member of Queen of the Apostles Church, VFW Post #737, and Catholic Order of Forresters. He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Karen A. (Snyder) Wettengel; daughters, Mary Jo Hughes and husband Neil, Joy Belt and husband Ken, Maureen Kruse and husband Darwin, Nancy Mulvania and husband Terry, Colleen Recher and husband Guy, Jenny Rounds and husband Mike, all of Council Bluffs, Jan Shudak and husband Steve, of Elkhorn, Neb., Jean Morz and husband Karl, of Ames, Rita Oppenheimer and husband Todd, of Edwards, Colo., Karen Wahl and husband Mark, of Omaha, Judy Schutz and husband Mike, of Bellevue, Neb., Joanne Grote and husband Rick, of Neola; sons, Paul Jr., and wife Jo, of Omaha, Tom and wife Vicky, of Seattle, Wash., Richard and wife Mary, of Council Bluffs, Robert and wife Kim, of Crescent, William and wife Sheila, of Council Bluffs; 57 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; stepdaughters, Joan Goeser and husband Russ, of Honey Creek, Amy Rallis and husband Kris of, Council Bluffs; stepsons, Tim Geier and wife Denise, Chris Geier, Mike Geier and wife Toni, all! of Council Bluffs, Patrick Geier and wife Dell, of Santa Ynez, Calif., Matthew Geier and wife Christine, of Ventura, Calif.; brother, William Wettengel and wife Karen, of Jefferson, Texas.; sister, Rose Smith and husband Don, of Lincoln, Neb.; former wife, Patricia Wettengel, of Council Bluffs; nieces and nephews. Rosary Recitation, Sunday 3 p.m. followed by a visitation until 6 p.m. at Queen of the Apostles Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial, Monday 10 a.m. at Queen of the Apostles Church with Rev. Dan Kirby, Pastor officiating. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery with military rites tendered by American Legion Post #2. A lunch will follow at the church.
