S. JEWELL IS CALLED Long Time Resident, Veteran of the Civil War Answers the Summons "Taps". Highly Respected A. S. Jewell, a long time resident of Logan, passed away at his home here Saturday morning, April 27th after a long illness with great suffering. He was born in Cass county, Michigan, March 6, 1843, hence was 76 years, one month and 21 days old when called to his rest. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Jewell and with his parents came to Harrison county when he was but nine years of age. He enlisted in the Union army in March 1862, and served his country in the Fifteenth Army Corps in Col. Crittenden's regiment. After the war he returned North and on the 9th day of September, 1866, he was married to Miss Clara E. Bunton in Mercer county, Missouri. Shortly after they moved to Harrison county and this has since been their home, except for a short time spent in the Dakotas. To them eleven children were born, and seven of them are living to mourn the loss of a father and cherish the memory of his well spent life. The living children are Charles Cyrus, Donzella Maude Kah! ler, Frederick Eugene, Letta Elvira Jones, Lester, Mabel Leonard and Blanche Norris. There are 21 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, besides the wife left to mourn the passing of this good man, citizen and friend. He became ill in December, 1917, steadily growing weaker until the time of his passing away, April 27th. The funeral service was held at the Christian church Sunday afternoon, at 3:30 conducted by Rev. F. K. Hargrove assisted by E. E. Clayton. The quartet of the Christian church sang "Abide with Me," and several other songs. The pallbearers were comrades of the Grand Army of the Republic of which the deceased had long been a faithful and active member. The body was laid to rest in Logan cemetery in the presence of a large number of friends and relatives. Mr. Jewell had long been a respected citizen of Logan. He was honest, industrious and excersied the principles of thrift and economy to the end that he accumulated considerable property. He was hone! st and square in all his dealings, a good example for many a man to fo llow. He had many frineds in this county who sympathized with him during his long period of suffering and extend their sympathy and commiseration to the bereft family.
