Daily Nonpareil Council Bluffs IA July 7th, 2004 Wendell K. "Woody" Underwood, 75, of Missouri Valley died July 5 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital. He was born Jan. 3, 1929, in Atlantic to Wendell and Corinne (Rapp) Underwood. He attended Ave. B grade school and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School with the class of 1947. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1947-1950. Mr. Underwood was a switchman on the Illinois Central Railroad for 37 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of Christian Church and United Transportation Union Local No. 0493. Mr. Underwood and his wife, Blanche E. (Spittler), were married Oct. 20, 1951. Survivors in addition to his wife include sons, Ricky L. Underwood and wife, Debbie, and Larry K. Underwood and wife, Diane, all of Council Bluffs; daughters, Mary Jane Lawton and husband, James, of Carson, and Susie C. Peterson and husband, Russ, of Plattsmouth, Neb.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Jane Juarez, of St. Paul, Minn.; sister-in-law, Diana Elkins and husband, Gordon; brother-in-law, Gregg Reese and wife, Debbie; and nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home. Funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at the funeral home with David Erickson, senior pastor of First Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with a luncheon following at First Christian Church. Memorials may be offered to the Kidney Foundation.
