(Higley) Sloth. She graduated from Viola Center High School. She graduated from Iowa State University in 1944 with a Home Economics Teaching Degree. She began teaching Home Ec and Science in Dunlap High School. On April 7, 1947 she married John T. Hanigan at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church. The couple farmed near Dunlap. Betty was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dunlap, member of Altar Society and Catholic Daughters. She had been a 4-H Leader, CCD teacher and enjoyed quilting, reading, traveling and time with family. Betty died Saturday, July 17, 2004 at the Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center in Dunlap. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Mary Piernicky. She is survived by her husband, John T. Hanigan, Sr. of Dunlap; three children, Mary Catherine and her husband Mike Piernicky of Omaha, Neb., and their two children Megan, Michael and his wife Jaime and their son Jack; John Thomas Hanigan, Jr. and his wife Kathleen of Dunlap and their two children Sarah and Rachel; Jeanne Marie and her husband Fred McMains of Underwood and their two children Nathan and Erin; sister, Helen Dorn of Storm Lake and many other relatives and friends. Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dunlap Tuesday morning, July 20, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Paul Strittmatter as celebrant. Musician was Marilyn Grote. Vocalist Katie Schaben sang "Ava Maria," "Be Not Afraid," and "One Bread One Body." Interment was made at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Dunlap. Pallbearers were Dan Brosnahan, Dick Hanigan, Jerry Joe Hanigan, Jim Hanigan, Joe Klein, Tom Klein. Fouts Funeral Home in Dunlap was in charge of arrangements.
