Nelsen, 55 08/23/2004 Mark A. Nelsen, Council Bluffs, died Aug. 11. He passed peacefully in the arms of his wife after a long battle with cancer. Mark was born Aug. 8, 1949 to Martin and Patricia (Reddy) Nelsen. He was a 1968 graduate of Missouri Valley High School. Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1968-72, and earned an award for Superior Service on board the U.S.S. Proteus (AS-19), from May 1969 to November 1970. Mark married Chris (Lustgraaf) Jones, Dec. 30, 1992. For the past 25 years, Mark was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad as foreman in the Bridge and Building department. In his leisure time, he enjoyed woodworking, camping and boating with friends and family. His most enjoyable moments were spent at a family cabin near La Cygne, Kan., where he was able to spend a few of his final days. Mark was preceded in death by his infant granddaughter, Halee Larsen. He is survived by his wife, Chris Lustgraaf Nelsen, Council Bluffs; daughter, Ashley Nelsen, Blair; daughter, Amber Poppen and her husband, George and son Aidan, Longmont, Colo.; son, Dana Nelsen, Longmont, Colo.; step-son, Nathan Jones and his wife, Roxie, Independence, Mo.; step-son, Scott Jones, Council Bluffs; step-daughter, Stacy Larsen and her husband, Carl, Lee Summitt, Mo.; his parents, Martin and Patricia Nelsen, Missouri Valley; brother, Blake and his wife, Lynn, Council Bluffs; sister, Kay Mocha and her husband, Bob, Missouri Valley; brother-in-law, Marlin Lu! stgraaf, Missouri Valley; brother-in-law, Kevin Lustgraaf and his wife, Shelley, Phoenix, Ariz.; father-in-law, Marlowe Lustgraaf and his wife, Betty, Edwardsville, Kan.; mother-in-law, Angela Smith and her husband, Glen, Missouri Valley; six grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends today (Friday, Aug. 13) from 6 to 8 p.m. at McCurdy's Funeral Home, Council Bluffs. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, Aug. 14 at 10 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church, Council Bluffs. Interment will be in the Branson Cemetery near Loveland, with lunch following at the Rand Community/Senior Center, Missouri Valley.
