Mick was born in Grand Island, Neb., on Feb. 13, 1922, to George Francis and Mabel (Harding) Sarratt. Mick was raised and lived, until his retirement, in Council Bluffs and Crescent, Iowa, and moved to Phoenix in 1988. While in Iowa, Mick was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corp in 1941 and enlisted in the U.S. Army in September 1942. He served as a sergeant in the 750th Tank battalion during their campaigns in the Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe. His Battalion helped to liberate the Nordhausen concentration camp on April 10, 1945, a day he never forgot. Mick worked most of his adult life in Iowa, operating cranes and other heavy equipment, and he was a proud member of Council Bluffs Local 234 Union of Operating Engineers. He farmed near Crescent, Iowa, for many years. When he bought his farm in the 1960s, he was surprised to learn that it had once belonged to his great-grandfather Benjamin Harding, an early Iowa pioneer. Mick was an avid hunter and outdoors man, a! nd he most loved the mountains around New Castle, Colo., where he spent many happy hunting trips. His wife, Lucille, predeceased him in February 2006. He leaves to mourn his passing two daughters, Marcia McGinn (Barry) and Mona Knight of Phoenix, grandchildren Megan Fairchild (Kirk) of North Carolina, and Jason Knight of Denver, also great-granddaughter, McKenna Pierce of North Carolina; brother, Mannie (Joan) Sarratt and sister, Betty (Jack) Cummings; sister-in-law, Jennie Sarratt of Council Bluffs, several nieces and nephews, and many friends. Mick chose to be cremated and his remains taken to Colorado. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The National Wildlife Federation. Memorial stones will be placed at Hazel Dell Cemetery, Crescent, Iowa, for Mick and Lucy Sarratt.
