He attended country school through the 8th grade, and he received his high school diploma later. Joe married Lois D. Athey on August 16, 1944. The couple farmed west of Woodbine then west of Dunlap. They then moved into the town of Dunlap in the fall of 1986. Lois died on October 31, 1998. Joe was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. In his spare time Joe enjoyed woodworking. Joe also enjoyed farming and his stock cows as well as reading a good book. Joe died on Friday, October 6, 2006, at his home in Dunlap attaining the age of 82 years, eight months, and one day. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lois; two brothers, Walter and Ray Renz; and a sister, Vera Aberhart. He is survived by his daughter, Sandra and her husband Russ Moucka of Omaha, Neb.; two sons, Larry Renz and his wife LaRain of Oxford, Georgia, Ronald Renz and his wife Suzie of Hawaii; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at St. John Lutheran Church in Dunlap, Iowa, Tuesday, October 10, 2006, at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Carla Ingebretsen officiating. Musicians were Jean Dommer and Max Poe. Selections included "Amazing Grace" and "On Eagle's Wings." Interment was made at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Dunlap. Pallbearers were Edward Athey, Brad Malone, Russ Moucka, Brian Renz, Rick Sederburg, Phillip Weed. Fouts Funeral Home in Dunlap was in charge of arrangements. ©The Dunlap Reporter 2006
