Kuen was born October 25, 1930, to Frances and Wilma (Point) Kuen in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Paul was a playful and sensitive boy and wanted to make sure everyone was happy. His parents nicknamed him “Doug.” Paul served his country and enlisted in the United States Army during the Korean War. This war changed his life forever. After his honorable discharge he was admitted into the Mental Institution in Norwalk, Iowa. He was transferred to the Veteran’s Home in Knoxville, Iowa and on January 16, 2002, Paul was transferred to Westmont Care Center in Logan, Iowa. Paul enjoyed his life at Westmont. He took his job very seriously in making other people smile. He liked to surprise the employees by giving them “gifts” of apples, pop, cards, and the most treasured gift of all, his smile. He loved music of all types and he enjoyed playing the guitar and singing ~ especially the song “You are my Sunshine.” This song will always echo in the halls of Westmont. Paul died on Saturday, October 7, 2006, at Community Memorial Hospital in Missouri Valley, Iowa attaining the age of 75 years 11 months, and 12 days. Paul was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Bill Kuen ~ who also served his country for three terms during the Viet Nam War dieing at the age of 38 years old from Agent Orange. Paul is survived by his sister, Vernell Klemp of Henderson, Nevada; and many other relatives and friends.
