He was the fourth of five children. In 1936, Giles' family moved to Dunlap. He attended St. Joseph School and graduated in 1946. Giles proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean War. He was also stationed at Treasure Island N.S., California having attained the rank of Sergeant. October 3, 1953, Giles married Ruth Mitchell in Dunlap, Iowa. The couple was blessed with eight children. The couple farmed west and north of Dunlap and then moved to town in 1962. Giles then started working for IBP in Denison and in 1966 he joined the USDA as a federal meat inspector. He retired after 23 years of services. Giles raised purebred Simmentals with his sons, John and Jim for 30 years. Giles was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Parish Council, the building committee for the Parish Center, and the! Knights of Columbus. He was also a 50-year member of the American Legion Post #224. Giles served as mayor of Dunlap for six years as well. Giles died on Saturday, March 31, 2007, at his home in Dunlap, Iowa, attaining the age of 78 years, one month, and 20 days. Giles was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Jane Bolton; two brothers, John and Gene Lacey; son, Michael; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Frank and Velma Mitchell; sister-in-law, Betty Hawn and great grandson, Riley Beeck. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Lacey of Dunlap, Iowa; three sons, Steve Lacey and his wife Deb, John Lacey all of Dunlap, Iowa, Jim Lacey of Soldier, Iowa; four daughters, Susan Lacey of Tampa, Fla., Kris Lacey of Omaha, Neb., Jean and her husband Dean Assmann of Alta, Iowa, Patricia and her husband John Reisz of Bellevue, Neb.; 10 grandchildren; one great grandchild; sister, Katie and her husband Charlie Lee of Manassas, Va.; brother-in-law, Jack Hawn of Dunlap, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends. Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dunlap, Iowa, Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Paul Strittmatter, SJ, as celebrant. Music was provided by Marilyn Grote who accompanied Jerry Baldwi! n for "Amazing Grace," "How Great Thou Art" and "On Eagle's Wings." Interment was made at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Dunlap. American Legion Post #224 provided military graveside rites. Pallbearers were Steve Lacey, John Lacey, Jim Lacey, John Reisz, Dean Assmann, Jacob Melby. Honorary pallbearers were Jack Hawn, Vernon Hawn, Mike Houston, Joe Lipichok, Bob Neilsen, Eddie Smith, John W. Smith, Bob Weber. Fouts Funeral Home in Dunlap was in charge of the arrangements. She was raised in Dunlap and graduated from Dunlap High School in 1989. Amy married Jim Heffernan on November 29, 1997 in Las Vegas, Nev. Amy graduated from Jennie Edmundson School of Nursing in 1997. She then worked for Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs as an RN for five years. In 2002 she started working for Harrison County Home Health. Amy was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. She enjoyed her boys and spending time with her family. Amy was a natural caregiver with her family and in her nursing career. She always put her patients at ease and helped them to smile even in difficult situations. She was also an avid basketball fan. When Amy was in high school she was a member of the National Honor Society. Amy died Tuesday, March 27, 2007, at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha, Neb., attaining the age of 35 years, nine months, and 18 days. ! Amy was preceded in death by her grandfather, Alex Esser and her father, Dick Anderson. She is survived by her husband, Jim Heffernan; three boys, Tyler, Michael, and Patrick; mother, Rose and her husband Don Thompson all of Dunlap, Iowa; sister, Suzanne and her husband Jeff Buffington and nephew Cole of Ankeny, Iowa; grandparents, Kenneth and Lois Anderson and Gustie Esser; parents-in-laws, Pat and Eileen Heffernan all of Dunlap; siblings-in-law, Dan and Diane Heffernan, Jodi Blom, Brian and Paula Heffernan, Colleen Wingrove, Rick Heffernan, Rob Heffernan, and Maureen Heffernan; and many other relatives and friends. Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Dunlap, Iowa, Friday, March 30, 2007, at 10 a.m. with Rev. Paul Strittmatter, SJ, officiating. Music was provided by Marilyn Grote and St. Patrick's Choir. Interment was made at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Dunlap, Iowa. Pasko, 88, Missouri Valley, died March 11 at Longview Home, Missouri Valley. Roxie Jeanette Pasko was born Oct. 30, 1918 in Whiting to Earl and Lillian (Stacy) Porter. She was the youngest of the four Porter girls and had a half sister who came later. Roxie graduated from Whiting High School in 1936. She met a young motorcyclist when he came into a local restaurant where she was working in Whiting. Roxie was married to Steve Pasko, June 16, 1940. Steve went to serve in World War II and Roxie filled that time by going to Bible College in Waxahachie, Tex. Later on, she moved to St. Louis and played baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals, when they began recruiting women players, since male players were in short supply during the war. She played short stop for the Cardinals, something she was very proud of. Roxie had three successful careers. She worked for J.C. Penney Co., ran a homemade ice cream stand from 1947 to 1970, and then worked at Longview Home as Activity ! Director for 25 years. She had several hobbies which included clowning as "Rocko" the clown, painting scenery and still life, and traveling. She and Steve enjoyed spending winters in Florida, where she volunteered doing clowning and playing in a ukulele club. Steve died in 1997. Roxie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Steve; and sisters, Gladys Ferrell, Earlene Porter, Mary Rose Loos, and Katherine Cobb. Survivors include: her half sister, Penny Long; dear friend, Dee Stueve, Missouri Valley. nieces, nephews; and many other dear friends who felt as if she were a mother and grandmother to them. Funeral Services were held at Hennessey-Aman Funeral Home, March 14, Pastor Don Robinson, officiant. Organist was Barb Sherer, vocalist was Rex Gochenour. Casket Bearers were: Jerry Sherer, Kelly Sherer, Jacob Hedger, John Sherer, Jason Sherer, and Kyle Sherer. Interment was in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens, Missouri Valley. Memorials may be given to Deaf Missions at ! the Church of the Nazarene, Missouri Valley. Christensen, 81, Woodbine, formerly of Moorhead, died March 10 at Alegent Health Community Memorial Hospital, Missouri Valley. Vernon Roy Christensen was born June 17, 1925, to Marion and Velma (Coates) Christensen in Moorhead. He was raised in the Moorhead and Pisgah area and attended country school in both Moorhead and Pisgah. In February of 1944, he joined the United States Navy. After his honorable discharge he returned home and married Phyllis Lorena Bothwell on August 14, 1946. The couple farmed near Moorhead. They later moved to Moorhead where Vernon had his own stock truck and corn shelling business for many years. Due to ill health, Vernon entered Rose Vista Nursing Home, Sept. 23, 2003. He enjoyed living at Rose Vista. Nobody was a stranger; and he welcomed everybody who came in the door and all the staff with a big smile, a wave and said, "YES SIR REE!" Vernon was a member of the Moorhead Christian Church. He loved little kids and his whole life inter! est has been his grandkids and great grandkids. His hobbies were playing cards, camping, and watching the World Series. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Violet Bothwell; brother, Maynard Christensen; and infant twin grandsons, Ricky and Randy Odefey. Survivors include: his wife, Phyllis Christensen, Woodbine; two children, Sandra and husband Steve Fouts, Dunlap; son-in-law, Darrell Odefey, Moorhead; son Tracy Christensen, Plattsmouth, Neb.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Memorial Services were held March 13 at Fouts Funeral Home, Woodbine, Rev. Ron Keith, officiant. Musicians were Mary Kay Eby and Phil Lubbers. Pamela was born May 18, 1955 near Pisgah, Iowa the daughter of Boyd and Jeanne (Carrigan) Pratt. She was raised in the Moorhead area and graduated from East Monona High School in 1973. During her school years, she excelled in track. Pam continued her love of running for many years participating in numerous 10K races throughout the state. After graduation, she was employed at Moorhead Equipment and for the past 30 years has worked at Moorhead State Bank and recently was assigned the position of head cashier. Pam was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church and also volunteered at Moorhead Christian Church. She was an avid runner and walker and also enjoyed Country music especially Reba McEntire. Children were the center of her life; she was an active supporter of St. Jude's Children's Hospital and her most enjoyable times were those spent with her eleven nieces and nephews. Survivors include her mother, Jeanne Pratt of Moorhead; two brothers, Todd and his fiancée Lark Addy of Moorhead and Trent and his wife Jennifer of Livermore, Calif; two sisters and their husbands, Patti and Larry Parks of Whiting, Iowa and Paige and Shawn Gosch of Moorhead and 11 nieces and nephews, Ryan Brown, Brandon and Whitney Pratt, Brady Pratt, Jaimie and Jessie Addy, Ashley Gotto and Ashley, Alex, Logan and Keagan Gosch. She was preceded in death by her father. Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 24, 2007, at Bethesda Lutheran Church at Moorhead with Pastor Carla Ingebretsen and Rev. Ron K! eith officiating. Music selections were "If I Had Only Known" and the congregation sang "On Eagle's Wings," "Here I Am Lord" and "How Great Thou Art" with Janice Smith as organist. Burial was in Spring Valley Cemetery at Moorhead. Casket bearers were Jeff Pratt, Chris Pratt, Robert Shol, Bill Edwards, Drew Howard and Walker Carrigan. "Bernie" Shields, age 84, of Arlington, Texas, formerly of Council Bluffs, passed away March 24, 2007, in Arlington. Bernie was born February 1, 1923 in Woodbine, Iowa. to the late Edward J. and Doris E. (Brownell) Shields. He graduated from Logan Iowa High School in 1941, where he was with the All Southwest Iowa First Team in football and basketball. Bernie served in the Army Air Corp in WWII and married LaVonne Kemmish on March 17, 1945. He was an aerospace quality controller. Born and raised in Iowa, Bernie and his family traveled a lot with his job and he returned to Iowa after his retirement. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, Elks Lodge and Eagles Club. A big part of his life was big band music and dancing, which he did with the love of his life, LaVonne, whom he was married to for 62 years. Amy was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. She enjoyed her boys and spending time with her family. Amy was a natural care giver with her family and in her nursing career. She always put her patients at ease and helped them to smile even in difficult situations. She was an avid basketball fan. When Amy was in high school she was a member of the National Honor Society. Amy died Tuesday, March 27, 2007, at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska attaining the age of 35 years, nine months, and 18 days. Amy was preceded in death by her grandfather, Alex Esser and her father, Dick Anderson. Funeral services were held March 24 at 10:30 a.m. at the Community of Christ Church in Pisgah with Evangelist John Lizer officiating. Recorded selections were, "Daddy's Hands," "Remember When," "Grandpa," and "The Dance." Honorary pall bearers were Larry Bryceson, Darrell Coyle, Barry Christensen, Wayne Jensen, Roger Spooner, Herb Clark, Bob Shearer. Pall bearers were Dick Mertz, Dale Shearer, Jeff Schaaf, Mike Shearer, Bill Shearer, Terry Shearer. Military graveside rites were by the Pisgah American Legion Post #408. Final resting place was Solider Valley Cemetery near Pisgah. Gary was born March 21, 1933, to Alfred and Beulah (Adams) Shearer in Little Sioux. He was raised in Little Sioux and Pisgah and attended school in Blencoe. He started farming with his parents until he joined the United States Army in 1953. Gary married Joanne Harper June 27, 1954, at the RLDS Church in Pisgah. He was honorably discharged in 1955, and worked at a dairy farm in Onawa for one year and in Moorhead for two years for Park Moorhead. Gary then started farming on his own in the Pisgah area. He retired from farming and moved into town and worked as a mechanic for Hutchinson Chevy Garage for 17 years. He was also the maintenance man for the town of Pisgah. He retired from this position in 1996. Gary was a volunteer fireman for 27 years for the town of Pisgah. He was a member of the Community of Christ and the American Legion Post 408 in Pisgah. Gary enjoyed farming, camping and hunting. He also enjoyed dancing and card playing. Gary loved to spend time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Willie Shearer and Earl Shearer. Survivors include his wife Joanne Shearer of Pisgah; two sons, Gary Lynn Shearer and Sheri Harker of Modale, Kenny Shearer and Peggy Caylor of Council Bluffs; one daughter Peggy and her husband Ralph Hussing of Pisgah; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Pat Shearer of Kearney, Neb., Joyce Shearer of Onawa; one uncle, Jess Shearer and his wife Harriet of Little Sioux; many other relatives and friends.
