Later that year the family moved to Woodbine where Dr. Walsh continued to practice medicine. Janet attended the Woodbine School and graduated in 1936. She attended college and then taught country school for a year. She then returned to college and graduated from Van Sant Business School in Omaha. She worked as a bookkeeper at the Fontenelle Hotel in Omaha. She then moved to Kansas City and worked at the Municipal Gas Company and the Family and Children's Bureau. Janet married Carl Chaffin in 1945. The couple was blessed with one son. In 1946 she returned to Woodbine to help care for her mother and later her father. On January 20, 1961, she married Gene Briney at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Harlan, Iowa. The couple lived in Woodbine, Park Rapids, Minnesota, Kimberling City, Missouri, and then returned to Woodbine to enjoy their retirement. Gene died in 1992. Janet was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was also a member of P.E.O. Janet enjoyed quilting, cross stitching, reading and watching sports on TV. She was also very supportive of the library. Janet died Monday, May 21, 2007, at Community Memorial Hospital in Woodbine, Iowa attaining the age of 88 years, four months, and 10 days. Janet was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gene; and her brother, Colonel John Walsh. Patricia was born on March 14, 1921, to William and Sophia (Sieczkowski) Leddy near South Bend, Neb. She attended a one room school in that area and graduated from high school in Ashland, Neb., in 1938 going on to attend Peru State Teacher's College. She was united in marriage with Martin A. Nelsen of Logan, Iowa, on November 5, 1942, in Omaha, Neb. After his 3 1/2 year tour of duty in the Army, they returned to farm near Logan. In 1948 they moved to a farm in Minnesota and in 1954 returned again to a farm north of Logan. They later lived in Missouri Valley for a number of years, moved to Logan, where they resided for 25 years, eventually returning to Missouri Valley. During her lifetime, Patricia was employed at Sunnyside Truck Stop, Clark's Limestone Quarry and Farm Credit Banks, performing accounting and bookkeeping duties. She enjoyed sewing, making clothes for kids, canning, cooking (especially making sloppy joe's with homemade buns), gardening, cleaning and crocheting ! blankets for the family. Patricia was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Missouri Valley. Patricia was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, William III and Frances in Infancy; sisters, Marian and Ellen; and her son, Mark. Survivors include her husband, Martin, of Missouri Valley; daughter-in-law, Chris Nelsen of Council Bluffs; son, Blake and his wife, Lynn, of Council Bluffs; daughter, Kay Mocha and her husband, Bob, of Missouri Valley; seven granchildren; five great grandchildren; sisters, Louise Crawford of Lincoln, Neb., Kathryn Fjeld of Fort Shaw, Mont., and Margaret McAndrew and husband, Everett, of Fremont, Neb. Judy Ann Newby was born August 9, 1942, in Exira, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Arletta Johnson Biggs. She grew up in the Exira area where she met Marvin Newby. On December 27, 1965, Judy and Marvin were married in Omaha, Nebraska. While residing in Missouri Valley, Judy held an in home day care. They moved to Adair 24 years ago where she was a homemaker. Judy enjoyed going to the casinos, playing bingo, watching car racing, and crossword puzzles. Judy also enjoyed having coffee and visiting with friends. Above all, Judy cherished the time she spent with her family and two grandsons. Judy is survived by her son, K.C. Newby and his wife, Lisa of Menlo, Iowa, and grandsons, Cole and Blake Newby of Menlo, Iowa. Judy was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Marvin. Virginia was born on September 18, 1927, in Missouri Valley, Iowa. She was a graduate of Missouri Valley High School and Jennie Edmundson Nursing College. Virginia and Gerald were married on August 3, 1949, in Minden. Virginia and Gerald resided on a farm near Minden for more than forty years. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Florence and Miner Nelson; her son, Thomas; as well as her brother, Rich and her sister, Joyce. Virginia was the loving parent of six children, Pamela of Larchmont, N.Y.; John Jay of Austin, Texas; Susan of Earlysville, Va.; Diane of Charlottesville, Va.; and Alan of Upper Montclair, N. J. He retired in 2002 due to ill health. Kenneth was a member of the Congregational Church. He liked to hunt, fish and bowl. Kenneth died on Tuesday, May 15, 2007, at the Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center in Dunlap, Iowa at the age of 53 years, three months, and 10 days. At that time they owned and operated the Dayhuff Chevrolet Dealership where Evelyn was the bookkeeper. Robert died in July of 1990. Evelyn was a member of the Christian Church, P.E.O., and a charter member of the Logan-Missouri Valley Country Club. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, camping, and golfing. Survivors include her sons, Robert "Wayne" Dayhuff of Logan, Richard Alan Dayhuff and wife Carol of Berthoud, Colo.; sister Emma Evans of Council Bluffs; brother Dean Gardner and wife Geraldine of Neola; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. (Mackey) Perse, age 76, of Denver, Colo. died April 23, 2007 at the Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, Colo.. Donna was born on Sept. 11, 1930 in Hamburg, Iowa to parents James Earl and Mabel B. (Trimble) Mackey. She graduated from Woodbine High School in 1948 and had worked at Eby Drugstore while in school. She then moved to Omaha and worked at Westinghouse. Westinghouse transferred her to New York where she met her future husband, Harold Perse. The couple was married on March 27, 1956 in South Carolina. The couple lived in Panama for two years then were transferred to Los Angeles and then to the Denver, Colo. area. Donna was baptized in the Woodbine Presbyterian Church. She is preceded in death by her father, James E. Mackey, Sr.; a brother, James E. Mackey, Jr.; and a sister, Shirley K. Corbett. Survivors include her husband, Harold, of Denver; two sons, Perry Perse of China and Joey Perse of Denver, Colo. and their families; mother, Mabel Mackey of Woodbine; sisters, Mabel Brummer of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Marilyn Connell of Omaha, Neb., Carol Morrison and husband, Bill, of Woodbine and Janet Heig and husband, Terry, of Sunrise Beach, Mo.; her six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. "Dick" was born in Dunlap on April 14, 1930, and graduated from the Dunlap Public School in 1948. He was District Manager for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in Salina, Kan., and had worked for them for 25 years when he retired in 1985. His wife, Vivian, preceded him in death. He became acting postmaster in Dunlap May 31, 1965 and was named as postmaster, August 18, 1966, which led to a career of 24 years of service in Dunlap. His wife Barbara is a former art teacher in Dunlap. They are the parents of two children, Chris Culver of Mesa, Ariz., and Kim Buter of Scottsdale, Ariz. Lillian was born June 9, 1919 in Greeley, Neb., to the late C. Elmer and Esther (Allinder) Burke. She graduated from Stromsburg, Neb., High School in 1937. Lillian married Donald Wheeler March 22, 1942 and to this union six children were born. They lived in Missouri Valley, Iowa before moving to Crescent in 1977. Lillian was a homemaker and master gardner. She was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Women's Assoc. Lillian was preceded in death by her son, Wayne Wheeler; husband, Donald Wheeler on April 8, 2003; two sisters; and one brother. She is survived by four daughters, Nancy Bertacini and husband, Al, of Omaha; Lu Hoogeveen and husband, Kim, of Bellevue, Neb., Sheryl Dinklage, of San Antonio, Texas, Valerie Wheeler-Dial and husband, L.J., of Dallas, Texas; one son, Duane Wheeler and wife, Beth, of Dallas, Texas; 13 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; two sisters, Martena Rover, of San Diego, Calif., Doris Wood and husband, Jim, of San Jose, Calif.; sister-in-law, Maybelle Burke, of Greeley, Neb.; nieces and nephews. Visitation with the family, Wednesday, 5:00 p.m. at Lillian's residence in Crescent (205 Riordon St.). Funeral Service, Thursday, 10:00 a.m. at Emanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. Glenn Schacht, interim pastor, officiating. Interment Walnut Hill Cemetery with a lunch following at the church. Memorials to Emanuel Lutheran Church preferred. Lila was born December 14, 1930, in Avoca, Iowa, to the late Harry and Lilly Burgin. She moved to Council Bluffs when she was 7 years old and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1948. Lila met Vernon Wulff of Woodbine, Iowa, and they were married on December 20, 1950. To this union, 3 sons were born. Lila was a homemaker who devoted herself to raising her family. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandson, Dylan. For the last 20 years she has been an avid bowler who was an admired member of 2 leagues. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Lila was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Lilly Burgin; and grandson, Andre Bazis. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Vernon Wulff, of Council Bluffs; sons, Daryl Wulff of Sheridan, Wyo., David Wulff and wife, Tammy, of Council Bluffs and Kevin Wulff and wife, Connie, of Council Bluffs; grandson, Dylan Wulff; granddaughter, Abby Robinson and husband, Jim; brother, Robert Burgin and wife, Nancy, of Council Bluffs. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Henry-Livingston Funeral Home. A private graveside service will be held at Garner Township Cemetery.
