His father and uncle Clem Bowersox opened the Boy's Store and Dean worked there after school at the age of nine. He graduated from the Dunlap High School in 1925. He attended Graceland College in Lamoni for one year. Dean decided to go to California in May of 1928, on his way he stopped in Lamoni to see his girlfriend Josephine Kopp. They were married on June 1, 1928. After an extended honeymoon in California, the couple returned to Dunlap in October of 1928 and Dean started working for Chauncy Buick in Dunlap. The dealership changed to McKenny and Seabury. From 1943 to 1949, Dean owned and operated his own body shop where the Heller Implement Dealership is located. He went back to work for McKenny and Seabury until 1975. From 1975 to 1987 he worked for Heffernan and Nauroth. He retired briefly and then worked for Gordon Brothers in Dow City. Dean died Wednesday, May 26, 2004 at Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center attaining the age of 96 years and five months. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife; son, John Jack Stewart; two daughters, Jerriann Noe and Betty Jodine; brothers, Donald, Paul and Lloyd Stewart; sisters, Helen Hunter and Ruth Luvaas. He is survived by his daughter, Patsy Gray of Dunlap; sister, Bonita Firestine of Hayward, Calif.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends. Memorial services were held at Followers of Christ Church in Woodbine Friday, May 28, 2004 at 11 a.m. with Elders Royl Roden and Danny Mefferd officiating. Musician was Lou Waite. Vocalist was Cyrila Roberts and selections included "Face to Face" and "It Is Well With My Soul." Final resting place was Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Dunlap. She was born July 25, 1918 in Nenzel, Neb., to Anton and Cecilia Lorenz Schaefer being the 7th of 8 children. She attended schools in Dunlap, Iowa and graduated in 1936. She was a licensed beautician. She later moved to Stockton, Utah, where she began working for the Union Pacific Railroad as a telegrapher. While working there. she met and married Kermit Stevens Hatch in Tooele, Utah. on April 29, 1944. She drove the neighborhood children to school for the Millard County School District transporting them to both Delta, Utah, to school and then later to Milford, Utah, for many years. Upon the death of her husband in 1963, she returned to work for the UPRR as a General Clerk and in 1964 working in Milford and Delta, Utah, Caliente, Nev., and Yermo, Calif. She retired on June 15, 1981. She enjoyed gardening and her grandchildren. She was a active member of the Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kermit; a grandson, Robbie Allen Dean; a son-in-law, Dayne Shumway; and brothers, Cletus, Paul, Alphonse and Jake Henrie Schaefer. She is survived by her children, Steven Lynn and Charlotte Hatch of Salina, Utah, Lois Shumway of Blanding, Utah, Rita and Robert Dean of Beaver, Utah, Lyle and Partner Gary Hatch of Fresno, Calif., JoEllen and Jim Alcorn of North Fork, Calif., and Roger and Gillian Hatch of Milford, Utah. She has 16 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren; brother, Jim Schaefer of Ephrata, Wash.; sisters, Matilda Decker of Dover, Del., and Loretta Killan of Watsonville, Calif. Funeral Mass was held on Friday, May 14, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Milford, Utah. Daily Nonpareil Council Bluffs IA June 2, 2004 Lois E. Tennigkeit, 62, of Underwood died May 30 at home. She was born April 5, 1942, in Persia to W.F. "Hines" and Elceda (Foje) Hansen. She lived in Persia most of her life, moving to Underwood three years ago. She was a 1960 graduate of Persia High School. She was a farm wife/homemaker and cook at the Club 191, Kopper Kettle and the Water Hole. She sold Studio Girl Cosmetics and later worked at World Insurance as a telephone interviewer. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Persia. She was an avid painter, crafter and country western dancer. Mrs. Tennigkeit was preceded in death by her husband, Donald L. Tennigkeit, on Nov. 27, 1990. She was also preceded by parents and sister, Shari Ledford, in March of 2004. Survivors include daughter, Debra L. Forsberg, and husband, Daniel, of Glenwood; son, Mark A. Tennigkeit, and wife, Laura, of Underwood; five grandchildren; three brothers, William Hansen and wife, Janice, of Omaha, Robert Hansen and wife, Julie, of Persia and Terry Hansen of House Springs, Mo.; nieces and nephews. Special thanks to family and dear friends who assisted Lois over the last several years. Visitation with the family will be Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home. The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Persia with the Rev. Dr. E.A. Hering officiating. Except for his military service in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, he lived and farmed south of Mondamin his entire life. He married Eileen Finken, Jan. 14, 1953 at the 5th Ave. Methodist Church, Council Bluffs. They were married 51 years. Jim loved farming, with one of his farms obtaining Century Farm status in 1998. He also enjoyed livestock, working in the yard and garden, playing cards with his family, entertaining his grandchildren and watching westerns on television. When he was younger, Jim enjoyed sports, excelling in basketball. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Maxine; and brother, Jack. Survivors include his wife, Eileen; daughters, Teri, Lori, Sheri Crabb and her husband, Matt; sons, Royal, Robin and his wife, Julie; grandchildren, Cari, John and Emily McClannahan and Jenna Crabb; brother, Gene; sister, Maureen Purcell; and step-brother, Jerry Cook. Funeral Services will be held today (Friday, May 21) at 10:30 a.m. at the Hennessey-Aman Funeral Home, Missouri Valley, Evangelist John Lizer, officiant. (Kopp) Stewart. Jack grew up in Dunlap and graduated from Dunlap High School. He attended Graceland College in Lamoni and Iowa State College. Jack migrated to Washington State to work during the harvest. Eventually he became a cement mason by trade. He contributed to the construction of several dams, bridges and other major projects in the region. While working in Oregon he met and married Mary Louise Ryan. Jack provided extra income for his family as a beekeeper. He was well known for the high quality of honey he produced. Jack enjoyed a life long passion of fishing, writing poetry and gold prospecting. Jack was a devoted member of the Followers of Christ Church in Woodbine. He was known for his Christ like attributes of kindness and generosity. Jack died on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at the Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center at the age of 72 years, eleven months and one day. Preceding him in death were his mother, Josephine Stewart and two sisters, Jodene Stewart and Jeri L. Noe. He is survived by his father, Dean Stewart of Dunlap; sister, Patsy Gray of Dunlap; his four children, Charles Stewart of Denver, Colo., Jeff Stewart and his wife Kim of Kennewick, Wash.; Rebecca and her husband Howard Jokela and Thomas Stewart and his wife Kenyetta Carter all of Seattle, Wash.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild and other relatives and friends. Burial was made in Calvary Cemetery. Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel was in charge of arrangements. Julie was born in Aline, Okla., the daughter of George and Rose (Shaddy) Abboud. She moved to Omaha, Neb., as a child with her parents and attended schools in Omaha, Neb. She married Francis B. Wadedo on Nov. 24, 1945 in Omaha, Neb. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Sioux City and had been here since that time. Mr. Wadedo passed away on June 15, 1998 in Sioux City. Julie served as secretary in the Investigation Division of the Sioux City Police Department for 25 years, retiring in 1983. She was active in many community activities, having been a member of lowana Chapter, American Business Women, serving as president and being named "Woman of the Year." She was a long-time member of the Symphony Guild, a charter member and served as a board member for many years. She was former president and charter member of the former Sioux City Children's Choir. She was a member of the Sioux City Women's Club and served on the board for many years in addition to serving on the board of the Church Women United representing Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Julie was a volunteer of The Center and was honored as "Volunteer of the Year." She was a member of the Carmel Guild, Catholic Women's League and Chapter EY of PEO. She was also a member of the Art Association, Beaux Arts Guild and a former member of the Youth Symphony Board. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Women's Altar Society and also taught Catholic Christian Doctrine at Immaculate Conception. Julie enjoyed reading, listening to symphony music and playing bridge. Survivors include four daughters, Linda Jean Wadedo Jochims and her husband Ronnie of Hinton (formerly of Dunlap), Mary Lou Nichols and her husband Dan of Colorado Springs, Colo., Sue Ann Ricker and her husband Dave of Clifton Park, N.Y., and Terri Jo Schweisthal of Denver, Colo.; nine grandchildren, Melissa Johnk of Sioux City, Ryan Jochims and Rochelle McGill, both of Omaha, Neb., Jeremy Nichols of Madison, Wis., Christopher Nichols and Suzie Nichols, both of Colorado Springs, Colo., Leah Ricke of Orlando, Fla., John Ricker of Syracuse, N.Y., and Emily Rose Maldonado of Oviano, Italy; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers, Jack, Frank and Bill Abboud; two sisters, Marie Rehan and Emily Abboud; and a son in infancy, Gary Michael Wadedo. Pallbearers were her grandsons; two sons-in-law, Lanny Johnk and Brian McGill; and two nephews, Dennis Rehan and Tom Rehan. Honorary pallbearers were her granddaughters. I need to determine the grave locations in order to request a volunteer to take a photo of the graves. If anyone is able to help, I would be very grateful. Daniel Harris was a prominent man in the communities where he lived... Audubon County, Guthrie County, and finally, Harrison County. He was a lawyer, a judge, and was elected to the Iowa House of Representatives in 1859. In addition, he was the proprietor / editor of a few different newspapers, including the Harrisonian, which was later renamed the Missouri Valley Times. He served four terms as Mayor of Missouri Valley & also held other local offices and memberships in community organizations. He was a very respected member of his community and died in Missouri Valley Oct. 9, 1911. His wife died Jan. 19, 1898, also in Missouri Valley.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Valarie Nuzum, Ruby Hornbeck and Marjorie Molle; and five brothers, Howard, Raymond, Lloyd, Kenneth (Bill); and Ed Gahm. Daily Nonpareil Council Bluffs IA May 25th, 2004 LOGAN - Esther M. Peters, 83, of Logan died May 23 at the Rose Vista Care Center in Woodbine. Esther was born March 26, 1921, in Honey Creek to Arthur and Ethel (French) Rief. She was married to Wayne C. Peters Aug. 17, 1938. They farmed in the Logan area for many years. Wayne died March 23, 2002. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wayne; son, Norvin; and brother, Gilbert. Survivors include her son, Arvin, and wife, Jannes, of Council Bluffs; daughter, Debbie Leonard and husband, Mike, of Logan; sisters, Thelma Ambrose of Walnut, Ila Hicks of Dunlap; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. Visitation with the family will be tonight from 6 to 8 at Logan Memorial Chapel in Logan. The funeral will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Daily Nonpareil Council Bluffs IA May 25th, 2004 WOODBINE - Patricia A. Arps, 78, of Woodbine died May 23 at Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine. On June 5, 1944, she married Lowell Arps at the Presbyterian Church in Woodbine. Pat taught school at Warman Country School west of Woodbine. She then taught fifth and sixth grade in Persia for one year. The couple lived in Ames, from 1949 to 1953 while Lowell was getting his degree. Then they moved to Lamoni for two years; Logan for five years; Emmetsburg for one year and finally to Woodbine. Pat was a substitute teacher and held several longtime substitute positions when the area schools needed someone. Pat was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, P.E.O., and a neighborhood club. She was a past member of the Eastern Star, and past president of Jennie Edmundson Hospital Auxiliary. She volunteered at Jennie Ed for 30 years, and she received the volunteer of the year award in 1976. Pat was preceded in death by her parents; two sons Keith Layne Arps on March 30, 2001, and Lloyd Arthur Arps on Feb. 24, 1994. Survivors include her husband, Lowell, of nearly 60 years; daughter, Mary Jo, and her husband, Dick Bonsall of Dunlap; two daughters-in-law, Jean Arps of Cordova, Tenn., and Sue Durfee of Council Bluffs; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Woodbine. Committal services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Dunlap. Visitation with the family will be Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at Fouts Funeral Home in Woodbine.
