    2. Daily Nonpareil Council Bluffs IA July 13th, 2004 WOODBINE - Betty Plath, 79, of Woodbine, formerly of Logan and Pisgah, died July 12 at Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine. Visitation with the family will be tonight from 5 to 9 p.m. at Fouts Funeral Home in Woodbine. The funeral will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Woodbine. Full obit is available at www.foutsfuneralhome.com: The following is the obit: Elizabeth “Betty” Girton Plath was born April 23, 1925 to Dean and Martha (Freymuller) Girton in Magnolia Township, Iowa. She grew up in the Magnolia area, attended county school and graduated from Magnolia High School. She went to a business school in Omaha and then worked in Omaha. In October of 1946, she married Joseph Plath at the Woodbine Methodist Church. The couple farmed between Pisgah and Woodbine. In March of 1952, they moved to the home place. Joe died on January 13, 1977. In October of 1996, Betty moved to Logan. In the fall of 2001, Betty moved to Rose Court. Betty was a member of the Methodist Church, having just recently transferring her membership to the Woodbine Methodist Church from the Pisgah Church.. She was a member of the Thought and Thimble Club, and she was a Republican Delegate. She was active in a women’s Bible study and enjoyed being a vacation Bible School Teacher. Betty also enjoyed gardening, flowers, animals, and reading and reciting poetry. Betty died Monday, July 12, 2004 at Rose Vista Nursing Home attaining the age of 79 years, two months and 19 days. . Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband, infant daughter Martha Jane on December 10, 1953, brother Darrell Girton, and sister Mary Margaret Maguire. She is survived by eight children Roger Plath & wife Barb of Boone, Iowa, Mary Jo & husband Jerry Lange of Reno, Nevada, Nancy & husband Ron Fogelman of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Rodney Plath & wife Ellen of Missouri Valley, Ronda & husband Barry McCormick of Aurora, Nebraska, Ruth & husband Joe Mehsling of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Randy Plath & wife Elaine of Ralston, Nebraska and Renee & husband Brad Brooks of Cheyenne, Wyoming; 23 grandchildren; nine + great grandchildren; four sisters Nadine & husband Bob Bryan of Jamaica, Iowa, Alice Landon of Logan, Iowa, Audrey Girton of Magnolia, Iowa and Ardith Crow of Tempe, Arizona; brother Richard Girton & wife Annie of Porto Rico; brothers-in-law Jerry Maguire of Logan, Iowa and Wes Plath & wife Doris of Ames, Iowa; sister-in-law Pat Girton of Ames, Iowa and many other relatives and friends. He was born Jan. 3, 1929, in Atlantic to Wendell and Corinne (Rapp) Underwood. He attended Ave. B grade school and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School with the class of 1947. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1947-1950. Mr. Underwood was a switchman on the Illinois Central Railroad for 37 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of Christian Church and United Transportation Union Local No. 0493. Mr. Underwood and his wife, Blanche E. (Spittler), were married Oct. 20, 1951. Survivors in addition to his wife include sons, Ricky L. Underwood and wife, Debbie, and Larry K. Underwood and wife, Diane, all of Council Bluffs; daughters, Mary Jane Lawton and husband, James, of Carson, and Susie C. Peterson and husband, Russ, of Plattsmouth, Neb.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Jane Juarez, of St. Paul, Minn.; sister-in-law, Diana Elkins and husband, Gordon; brother-in-law, Gregg Reese and wife, Debbie; and nieces and nephews. He farmed in Pottawattamie and Harrison counties all his life. He enjoyed traveling, fishing and hunting. He and his wife, Eileen, had been married for 60 years. Survivors in addition to his wife include a daughter, Gayle Gorham and husband, Sheldon, of Greeley, Colo.; two sons, Jerry of Council Bluffs and Steve and wife, Marsha, of Missouri Valley; a sister, Elaine Taylo of Missouri Valley; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was born Nov. 22, 1925, in Mondamin to John C. and Helen (Brown) Gillette and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He worked at Ballenger Automotive, then had a 34-year career as a materials inspector for the Iowa Department of Transportation until his retirement in 1988. After retiring, he worked for Anderson Camera & Photography. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and served as commander of Post No. 3415 in Atlantic from 1977-80. He was a member of Memory Makers Camera Club and Fontenelle Forest Camera Club. He was named Volunteer of the Year in 2003 by the Loess Hills Preservation Society. Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Azar of Omaha; two sons, Steve and wife, Patti, and Bruce, all of Council Bluffs; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a niece and a nephew and their families. Visitation with the family will be Tuesday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Funeral Home. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev.
