His farm consists of one hundred and twenty acres, paying $8.65 per acre. He built a house 22 x 28 feet, with a wing 12x16 feet; dug a well, erected out buildings, put up a windmill, and set out an orchard of one hundred trees. He has added to his farm until it now contains two hundred and eighty acres. Our subject was born March 17, 1840, in Ohio. He is a son of Ebenezer and Elizabeth (SHAFFER) DAKAN, who had five children. Our subject lived at home, until about twenty years of age, when he enlisted in Company E, Thirty-eight Ohio Infantry, and was in the Army of the Cumberland, under Gen. Thomas, and remained in the army until May, 1864. He was in the battles of Mill Spring, Murfreesboro, the siege of Vicksburg and other engagements. He served under his original enlistment until April 4, 1863, and was discharged at St. Louis, Mo., and was then appointed captain of Company K, Mississippi Marine Brigade, by Edwin M. Stanton, then Secretary of War. He served in this capacity until May, 1874, when he was discharged at Vicksburg, Miss. Upon his return home he went to farming, coming to Harrison County in 1876. Politically Mr. DAKAN is a Republican, “first, last and all the time.” He was married March 29, 1868 to Adaline LINCOLN, daughter of Thomas and Rachel (KAY) LINCOLN, natives of Ohio, who had seven children. Mr. and Mrs. Dakan are the parents of four children -- William L., born April 29, 1869; Nellie A., December 22, 1870; Harry L., July 22, 1874, and Pearl, September 27, 1885. I do know that he was in Douglas County Neb in 1900. He was a Civil War Veteran. In 1920 he is listed as living with his brother George and family as a 77 year old. He is listed under the Harrison Co Probates in 1922. George W Powers died in 1930 according to his headstone in Linville Cemetery. Are there obits available from that time period? I have pictures of Geroge's son Winfield Scott Powers and his daughter Frances with unknown husband. George and Virginia Powers also had two other daughters...Jessie and Ruth. Hello list: I was wondering if anyone out there could tell me anything about Amanda Newbery, who married James A. Newbery of Mills and Pottawattamie Cos. IA. She has ties to Harrison Co. We think that her maiden name may have been Elliott, but we are unsure at this juncture. An Amanda (whose maiden name we are unsure of) married James Newberry who resided in Pottawattamie Co. and Mills Co. when she was just a teenager, and he was in his 80's. The marriage took place sometime after the death of his fourth wife in Jan. of 1870 at Indian Creek. By 1876 James was living with his daughter in Pottawattamie Co. According to their family record he was ill for about six years and lived with them in Wheeler's Grove. His farm was in Indian Creek in Mills Co. Amanda either divorced or left and supposedly went into Harrison Co. We found an Amanda Newberry in the California census of 1930 and followed her backward to Iowa and Indiana which is where we get the Elliott name. We think that she also may have gone to Page Co. IA and married a man named William Epla, about 1876 who seemed to have a penchant for marrying and divorcing. Epla has two more wives after Amanda and lives in Page Co. If our hunch is correct, and our Amanda is the same person who went on to California, she dies shortly after the census at the age of 76. Her son Harlan is there in California as well. (obituary info named him) This has been pieced together with census records. We have been unable to come up with a marriage record for Amanda and James Newberry in Iowa, yet that's where they lived. The only record we have found her on is the deed that she signed when she and James Newbery sold a piece of property in Pottawattamie Co. He died in 1880, but she was not listed on his will or the probate. The only indication that she ever existed for him was in family lore, and where the word "widow" is crossed out of the probate record. James' son mentions his fathers last wife went to Harrison Co. Thanks for any info anyone can provide. This is a real conundrum. Sue Simonich

Is anyone out there related to Amanda Newbery who married James A. Newberry and lived in Mills and Pottawattamie Co then Harrison Co? She married him as a very young woman, and apparently was not married to him for very long. He had recently lost his wife when she and James A. Newberry were married. We have found her on a deed selling property with her husband, but when he became ill, it seems that perhaps his family deemed her unable to care for him and took him into their own home. Amanda disappears. He died in 1880 in Pottawattamie Co. Later in a biography about James' son, it is mentioned that Amanda left the Pottawattamie/Mills Co. area and went to HARRISON County, Iowa. She was not mentioned in his will, except that the word widow is crossed out. We believe there was something contentious going between his family and she left. She was reported to be very young (a teenager) and inexperienced, and he was in his 80's. If anyone out there knows of her and what happened to her, please contact me. We have found one Amanda who died in California, but we are unsure if they are one in the same person, though their vitals are extremely similar. We don't know a great deal about her, and only recently figured out her first name from the above mentioned deed. Thanks in advance. Sue
