He grew up on a farm in Cass Township, and attended Green Country School and Woodbine High School. February 3, 1930, John married Clara Mefferd in Papillion, Neb. John farmed many years in the Woodbine and Magnolia areas. He established many relationships while selling Pioneer Seed Corn for over 20 years. He loved hunting and also enjoyed and cared for his family. John was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Clara; daughter, Mary Jane; two infant children; his son-in-law, Bob Street; and four sisters, Pearl Davis, Lillian Tillman, Irene Tillman, and Iva Tillman. He is survived by his three children, Joan and her husband Arlen (Butch) Ullrich, Logan; Jack Lewis and his wife Betty, Papillion, Neb.; Lorraine Street, Omaha; six grandchildren, Jeff Ullrich and his wife Linda, Omaha; Mark Ullrich, Omaha; Steve Ullrich and his wife Tina, Trophy Club, Tex.;, Barbara and her husband ! Bill Buenz, Edina, Minn.; Stephanie Lewis, Papillion, Neb.; Becky and her husband Jeremy Werner, Omaha; five great grandchildren; sister Lenora and her husband Eddy Trimboli, Lakewood, N.J., and many other relatives and friends. Funeral Services were held Oct. 30 at the Fouts Funeral Home, Woodbine, the Rev. Marvin Siems, officiant. Musician was Darlene Lamberson, Vocalist Rick Powell, and Violinist was Renee Ullrich. Pall Bearers were Jeff Ullrich, Mark Ullrich, Steve Ullrich, Barbara Buenz, Stephanie Lewis, and Becky Werner. Interment was in the Woodbine Cemetery. Wallace was born Sept. 7, 1920 in Mason City to Wallace and Eunice (McGinnis) Smith, Sr. He grew up in Florence, Neb. In 1937, Wallace joined the U.S. Army Cavalry. When the United States entered WW II, he joined the 101st Airborne Division, and was among the first wave of paratroopers jumping into France on D-Day, June 6, 1944. He fought ad was wounded in France. Wallace rejoined the 101st to fight in Holland, where he became a prisoner of war. He was married to Doris L. Layton in 1948. Wallace worked at Wilson Packing Co., Omaha, for many years as a boiler engineer. Doris died June 25, 1996. Wallace loved fishing, gardening and doing crafts. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Doris; twin brother, Walter; brothers, Raymond and Ray; step-brothers, Harry and Harold McGinnis; and sister, Lucille Schaber. Survivors include his sons, Jerry Smith, Schaumburg, Ill.; and Mike Smith, Carter Lake; grandson, Michael Carrier, Carter Lake; nieces, nephews and many friends. Funeral Services were held Nov. 2 at the Mondamin Church of Christ, Pastor Wayne Bahr, officiant. Organist was Sharon Shelton. Casket bearers were Dave Myers, Curt Hougen, Danny Kougias, Mike Ford, Kenny Layton, and Michael Carrier. Military honors were conducted by the Modale and Mondamin Legion Posts. Later, her oldest son Michael was born, and the family moved to Oregon, where Margaret Ann (Peggy), Steve, and Dave were born. Nina's family lived in Junction City and Portland, and later in Eugene as her children finished high school. Nina's first marriage ended in 1955, and in 1958 she married Jack Sorensen. That marriage later ended and Nina chose to live alone in Salem before settling in Silverton, a town she grew to love. She obtained her real estate brokers' and insurance licenses in Junction City. While in Silverton she taught ESL at Chemeketa Community College, and volunteered at and supported the Silverton Art Association. Nina was preceded in death by her son David. She is survived by brother Dale and his wife, Noni, St. George, Utah; brother, Duane, Springfield, Ore.; son, Michael, who lives in Wichita, Kan., with his wife Rose; by daughter, Peggy, who lives in Olympia, Wash.; by son, Steve, who lives in Cary, N. C., with his wife, Helen Tack; and by adopted son, John Jacob. She has eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service was held Nov. 6 at the Silverton Art Association, Silverton Ore. Interment was private. Nina previously had requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent in her name to the Silverton Art Association, 303 Coolidge St., Silverton, OR 97381, for young artist scholarships. Fern was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Lester Yager, and her oldest son, C. Edward Scebold. Joe attended Modale grade school and then Mondamin High School. At the age of 17, Joe entered the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served on board the USS Gatling in the Pacific Theater and was in heavy combat. The Gatling assisted in a convoy with the USS Missouri as it entered Tokyo Bay, Japan for the signing of the armistice ending the war. After his military service, Joe went to the Sioux City barber College in 1947. He was married to Marian Anderson, June 25, 1949 in Mondamin. Joe owned and operated a barber shop in Mondamin, then in Modale, and later, in Missouri Valley, until 1963, when the family moved to Millbrae, Calif. In 1965, they moved back to Missouri Valley where Joe worked for the First National Bank. He retired as a vice president, Feb. 4, 1988. Joe and Marian had been married for 55 years. Joe was a former Missouri Valley School Board member, charter member of the Lions Club, and a member of the Logan-Mo. Valley Country Club. He enjoyed golfing, bowling and walking to talk to his friends and business associates. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; son Gary in 1977; and brothers and sisters, Harold, Carl, Don, Mary, Margaret and Paul. Survivors include: his wife, Marian, Missouri Valley; daughter, Liz Poore and her husband, James, Logan; grandchildren, Lisa Emswiler and her husband, Rick, Missouri Valley; Dindy Voster and her husband, Dan, Missouri Valley; Clint Cunard, Phoenix, Ariz.; great-grandchildren, Harper and Grady Emswiler; nieces, nephews and many friends. Dwight was born Aug. 16, 1923, in Pisgah, to Wilson & Emma (Bock) Hamer. He graduated from Pisgah High School in 1941. Dwight then worked at the bomber plant in Buffalo, New York and then the Bomber Plant in Omaha. January 23, 1943, he married Margaret Harmon at the RLDS Church in Omaha. In June of 1943 he entered the Army Air Corps. He served his basic training at Denver, Colorado then took pilot training at Washington State College in Pullman, Wash. After his schooling he was stationed in Amarillo, Tex. as a cockpit instructor for the B-17 and B-29's. After his discharge he returned to Pisgah and operated a service station and tank wagon. Dwight then began trucking with his brother Vernon. Later on he became a dispatcher at the Livestock Exchange in Omaha. He retired as a dispatcher in the 1980's. Dwight was an avid sports fan since the age of seven. He loved to follow all of the high school sports as well as other sports. Later he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and golfing. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Vernon Hamer; and sister, Joy Watson. Dwight is survived by his wife Margaret, Pisgah; four children, Diane and her husband, Curt, Hanson, Fairfield; Linda Terry, Ralston, Neb.; Tim Hamer and his wife, Mary, Chariton; and Terry Hamer and his wife, Judy, Sioux City; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; sister, Cecile and her husband, Ben, Matthews, Pisgah; and many other relatives and friends. Memorial Services were held Nov. 23 at the Community of Christ Church, Pisgah, Elder Steve Holben and Evangelist John Lizer, officiants. Vivian lived her whole life in the Missouri Valley area. She was a homemaker and very devoted to the Church of Christ in Missouri Valley, where she served on many committees. Howard died May 19, 1998. Vivian was married to Ralph Ellsworth, July 10, 2004 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Vivian was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard; son, Roger; stillborn daughter; sisters, Betty and Maxine, and brother, Herb. Survivors include her husband, Ralph, Missouri Valley; son, Richard Kelly and his wife, Anne, Missouri Valley; daughter, Joan M. Upon receiving notice that he was going g to be drafted during the Korean War, he elected to enlist in the U.S. Air Force, in March of 1952. After serving four years, including tours in Iceland and French Morocco, he returned to the Modale/Mondamin area to help his father in farming. In February of 1957, Donald married Mary Elaine Vittitoe. Three weeks later he received a telegram from the President of the United States stating that he was recalled to active duty for 48 months. He remained in the service for 22 years, six months and 17 days, retiring Oct. 1, 1974. The couple retired in the Phoenix, Ariz. area, where he held numerous jobs, most notably at Northrup Corp. TECH Rep., Motorola, Inc., as field engineer, Honeywell Bull, Bull, N.H., as manager of the production process, equipment and facilities, and with the City of Peoria, Ariz. He also went to college full-time and received degrees in middle management and general business. Don was a life member of the Roman Catholic Church, teaching catechism for three years in Germany. He was also a life member of the Air Force Sergeants Association and the American Legion. Survivors include his wife, Mary Elaine, Missouri Valley; children, Dena Faaborg and her husband, Jon, Ft. He graduated from Missouri Valley High School with the Class of 1940 and served with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. Jack married Mary Jane Foote, also of Missouri Valley, Nov. 20, 1944 in California. Jack and his young family returned to Missouri Valley in 1946, where he worked and raised his family. Most knew him as a rural U.S. Mail carrier and an advertising salesman for Curt Ralston Company. Jack had a lifelong interest in sports, serving as student manager for the high school for four years under Coach Warren Gaer, and one year as a manager at Pepperdine University. He was an avid bowler, even sponsoring his own team, Peterson's Specialties. Most of his enthusiasm, though, was for St. Louis Cardinals baseball and Iowa Univer! sity Hawkeye Football. The Peterson house on Grove Street was a black and gold shrine to Iowa football. Jack was proud of many things, including stints as a school board member for Missouri Valley and for St. Albert's in Council Bluffs. His biggest legacy was the family he leaves. His parents divorced when he was young, forcing Jack to board with local families. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Rev. Cyril, Harold, and Scott Peterson; his sister, Opal Peterson; and son-in-law, Robert Deschenes. Mrs. Risney, widow of popular photographer, broadcaster and businessman, Harry Risney, was retired as a teacher in the Missouri Valley School system, and continued to operate Risney Studio. For many years, she was the narrator of the annual Missouri Valley High Vocal Department Christmas program aired on KMTV, Channel 3 in Omaha. She was long associated with the Missouri Valley Alumni, providing photos of each class' groups during reunions, and was well-known for her photo sessions at Prom and other school events and sports. She photographed the Homecoming Court at the football game and dance each year until just recently.
