He attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Dunlap and graduated in 1942. Bob married Mary Jane O’Connell on February 19, 1946. The couple farmed east of Dunlap. In 1987 their house burned down so the couple moved into Dunlap. Mary died on June 19, 1988. Bob worked for many years at Cogdill Farm Supply. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. Bob had a good strong faith in God. He enjoyed dancing, playing cards and dice games. He also enjoyed reading and being around family and friends. Bob had a wonderful sense of humor. Bob died on Thursday, September 14, 2006, at his home attaining the age of 82 years and 11 days. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Jane; and grandson, Christopher Assmann. He is survived by his five children, Pat Assman of Custer, South Dakota, Jane and her husband Jack Leby of Millstadt, Illinois, Marty Assmann of Dunlap, Iowa, Mike Assmann of Layton, Utah, Katie and her husband Chuck Cruse of Aurora, Colorado; six grand-children; three great grandchildren; two sisters, Helen and her husband Louie Stolz of Dunlap, Iowa, Kathleen and her husband Mel Langenfeld of Imperial, Nebraska; brother, Bump Assmann and his wife Rene of Dunlap, Iowa; brother-in-law, Greg Schwery and his wife Linda of Houston, Texas; sister-in-law, June Assmann of Storm Lake, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends. He graduated from Missouri Valley High School in 1947, and served in the U.S. Air Force for two years on active duty, and four years in reserve. He married Mary Ann Peterson in 1950. The couple owned and operated the local Conoco station until he went to work for the Iowa State Highway Commission. In 1955, Duane became employed by the U.S. Postal Department, later the Postal Service, as a walking carrier, and applied for and received a position as a rural postal carrier. He retired in 1988. Duane enjoyed fishing, hunting, water skiing and especially the summer vacations to Bemidji, Minn, with the family. He was an avid sports fan and faithful follower of the Green Bay Packers. He was a 50-year (plus) member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, 50-year member of Julius F. Muller Post, American Legion and Valley Lodge No. 232, A.F. & A.M., and Triune Chapter No. 81, Royal Arch Masons. Duane was preceded in death by his father, Paul. Survivors include: his wife, Mary Ann, Missouri Valley; mother, Velma Smith, Council Bluffs; children, Terri Frye, Des Moines; Susan Pearson and her husband, Michael; Michael Frye and his wife, Debbie and Lisa Frye, Colorado Springs, Colo. ; four grandchildren, Scott and Michele Pearson, Herman, Neb., and Matt and Mark Frye, Missouri Valley. Ruth and Rex farmed northwest of Pisgah until their retirement. Ruth was a life long member of the Community of Christ and was the organist for over 35 years. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Order of Eastern Star. She was past Matron and recipient of a 50 year membership pin. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Rex; son, Bill; grandson, Bruce; five brothers,Fred, John, Irvin, Jim and Francis; and three sisters, Evelyn Savary, Alice Vredenberg, and Edna Carroll. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Ruby Hebb of Moorhead, Iowa; three grandchildren, Brian and Resa Hebb of Red Oak, Iowa, Dixie and Dr. Tommy Norris of Kansas City, Missouri, Deb and Steve Kuhlmann of Ute, Iowa; seven great grandchildren, Andrew and Alana Allen, Lacey Moroney, Korey Bruce and Keely Kuhlmann, and Chelsea and Ciara Hebb. A celebration of life was held at Hospice Bend-La Pine. Graveside services were held in Woodbine, Iowa. John was born on July 27, 1924 in Woodbine to Frank and Marie (Pollard) Pugsley. He graduated from Woodbine High School in 1943. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He attended Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, after his discharge from the Navy. He married Lavonne Brookhouser in May, 1945 in Woodbine. John was the vice president of marketing for Tractor Supply Co. for many years. He later purchased the Hiawatha Farm and Home Store in Hiawatha, Kan. After he sold the business, he traveled and skied before moving to Bend, Or. in 1981. He enjoyed skiing, fishing, beekeeping, boating and water-skiing, Brittany dogs, travel, woodworking, playing cribbage, being a pilot and spending time with family. Survivors include two sons, Michael of Tacoma, Wash., and Kent of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three daughters, Carol Stiles of Bend, Or., Kelly Ellsworth of Yorkville, Ill., and Beth Cummings of Woodbine; a brother, Jerry, of Beatrice, Neb.; 12 grand-children; and one great-grand-child. She attended a business school in Omaha following graduation. Violet married Thomas Eugene Bothwell Nov. 15, 1946. The couple farmed near Moorhead and then moved to a farm near Pisgah. Violet was a supervisor at Westmont Care Center in Logan for 17 years. Her husband Gene died January 9, 2002. Violet enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren and great grandchildren, cooking, gardening, and shopping. Besides her husband, Violet was preceded in death by a brother Maynard Christensen. Survivors include her three children, Tom Bothwell and his wife Peggy of Moorhead, Darla Ronk of Omaha, Neb., and Vicki and he husband Lonnie McHugh of Pisgah; seven grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; brother Vernon Christensen and his wife Phyllis of Moorhead; special friend Opal Pape of Moorhead and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services ere held Wednesday, Aug. 30 at 10 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Persia with Pastor Merlene Ostebee officiating. Organist was Dorothy Busch. Music selections were "Abide With Me," and "Nearer My God to Thee." Casket bearers were Jeffrey Larsen, Andrew Martens, Tom Smith, Justin Nelson, Rich Hansen, and Jim Masker. Military honors were by the Persia American Legion Post 314. Robert was born November 4, 1934 in Persia to Carl and Elsie Pieper Martens. He was baptized and confirmed in Persia at Trinity Lutheran Church. Bob graduated from Persia High School in 1954. Following high school he joined the U. S. Army where he served as an assistant gunman o the 60 mm mortar at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and Fort Ord, Wash., and also in Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1956. Bob was a 33-year member of the Persia American Legion Post 314. Bob attended Universal Trade School and began employment at Industrial Electric Reels in Omaha, Neb. He retired in 1990 after 33 years of employment. Bob enjoyed life through fishing and many road trips with friends. He loved to spend time with his sister and brothers, nieces, nephews, and their families and also his dog, Chico. Much of Bob's later years were spent riding his golf cart around Persia with Chico, talking, and playing cards with friends. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; brother Gary Martens and nephew Dean Nelson. Survivors include his sister Betty Larsen and husband Lewis of Persia; brother Arlon Martens and wife Vickie of Council Bluffs; nieces, nephews, family and friends. The Logan Memorial Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.

Graveside Services were held Aug. 24 at the Logan Cemetery, Pastor Tom Lewis, officiant. Logan Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements. Walls, 81, Mondamin, died Aug. 15 at Methodist Hospital, Omaha. Billy was born Oct. 15, 1924 in Missouri Valley to Frank and Iva (Williams) Walls. He graduated from Missouri Valley High School in 1942 and entered the United States Air Force in October of that year. Billy received his pilot's wings in March of 1944. He was an advanced trainer instructor at Williams Field, Chandler, Ariz. While there, he met Cleora Peterson and they were married, Dec. 24, 1944 at Thatcher, Ariz. The couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2004. Billy became a B-17 and B-29 airplane commander. He was discharged from the service in 1946. After serving his country, Billy attended Arizona State University for pre-med and graduated from Kirksville College of Osteopathy, Kirksville, Mo., in June of 1951. He practiced medicine in Mondamin for 38 years, retiring from practice in 1990. After retirement, Billy became a physician with the U.S. Amateur Boxing Association, doing extensive traveling in Europe. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, tennis, and was a baseball coach for Little League. He and Cleo have spent the winter months in Arizona since 1990. Survivors include: his loving wife, Cleora; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert D. and Debi Walls, San Clemente, Calif., Dr. Gary and Chris Walls, Fallbrook, Calif., and Dr. Jeffrey and Lisa Walls, Omaha; grandchildren, Nicole and her husband, Tim Dove, Jaclyn, Alex, Elizabeth, Brandon and Michael Walls; sisters, Trulis Richardson, Milwaukie, Ore., and Bonnie Jensen, Missouri ! Valley; and brother, James Walls, Smyrna, Tenn. Funeral Services were held Aug. 19 at the First United Methodist Church, Missouri Valley, pastor Bob Dagit and Evangelist John Lizer, officiants. Organist was Genelle Riseland, vocalist was Brenda Marshall. Honorary Casket Bearers were: Bud Busing, George Walls, Ronnie Birdsall, Larry Jensen, Chuck Adair, Gary Smith, Arlyn Anderson, and Joe Walls. Casket Bearers were: Robert Walls, Dr. Jeffrey Walls, Randy Jensen, Alex Walls, Dr. Gary Walls, and Matt Earlywine. Interment was in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens, Missouri valley. Military honors were conducted by Julius F. Muller Post No. 337, American Legion, Missouri valley. Hennessey-Aman Funeral Home, Missouri Valley, was in charge of arrangements. The family requests memorials to the United Methodist Church, Missouri Valley; or the Mondamin Fire & Rescue department. Jones on Dec. 29, 1945. She is preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Nell Driscoll, and Norma Brown; and brother, Lyle Skelton.
