Henry Stirtz Passes Away Henry Stritz, who formerly lived near Logan, died at his home in Council Bluffs Tuesday, aged 70 years. He leaves a widow and seven children, three of whom, William, Walter and Edwin, reside in this vicinity. The remains will be brought to Logan this evening and the funeral will be held at Magnolia Friday. Respectfully submitted for other researchers.

Born in Germany, she came to America and to Illinois in her youth. She was married to Henry Stirtz, and they came to Harrison county living for several years near Logan at the intersection of the Logan-Magnolia and Glen roads. Twenty-nine years ago,she moved to Elmwood, Nebr., and five years later to Council Bluffs. Nine children were born to them: Lydia who died in Magnolia in 1903, Mrs. Lizzie Lorenz, died in Colorado in 1913; Philip whose death occured in Kansas in 1932; Walter died in Magnolia in February 1934; and surviving, William of Magnolia; Daniel of Omaha; Ed. C. of Missouri Valley; Mrs. Emma Lorenz of Topeka, Kans., and Ella at home. Surviving also are 29 grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren. She was a member of the Evangelical church. The funeral will be heldat Council Bluffs Thursday, February 14, at 1:00 p.m.. Interment in magnolia! cemetery. She is kindly remembered by many friends and acquaintances.

Dell attended Galland’s Grove Country School. He then began farming with his parents. Dell married Ruth Hartwig on March 21, 1937, at the Lutheran Parsonage in Harlan. The couple farmed in the Galland S grove area on Dell S parents farm. The couple moved into Dunlap in mid 1970s. Dell was a member of the St. Patrick S Catholic Church. He especially loved farming and his favorite tractor was his B John Deere. Dell also loved horses and he was always concerned about race horses. Dell died on Saturday, October 21, 2006, at the Dunlap Nursing and Rehab Center in Dunlap, Iowa at the age of 90 years, two months and 18 days. Dell was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Hubert, Tom, Bill, Mort and John; one sister, Marguerite O Day; infant daughter; and daughter, Shelley O Day ~ she was 18 Years old and had Cerebral Palsey. These are a few of her favorite things: kissing Phil, grandchildren, angels, playing 500 or euchre, baking bread with "Robin Hood" flour, having tea parties, wearing hats, sewing polka dot matching outfits, painting, gardening, having company over, designing houses, making sugar cookies and apple pies, a well deserved martini, planting seeds, dancing, watching Little League games, camping. Frances Darlene Poitevin was born September 2, 1913, to Leslie and Emma (Wiggins) Poitevin at her parent's home near Dow City, Iowa. Frances graduated from Dow City High School in 1932 and attended college in Cedar Falls for one year. She spent a number of years working in La Jolla, California, Seattle, Wash., and several summers in North East Harbor, Maine as a maid. While living in Maine, she was given a ride to the store by John D. Rockefeller. However, she didn't realize who he was until after the ride. She returned to Woodbine in 1959, living with and helping her parents. Her father died in 1960 and her mother in 1975. Frances was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Woodbine. She loved her flowers and her garden. She had around 80 peony plants; with her first one given to her by Herbert White in 1966. He gave her some lilacs the same year. Frances died on Tuesday, October 10, 2006, at Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine, Iowa at the age of 93 years, one month, and eight days. Frances was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Howard; three sisters, Mildred, Grace, and Lois; and niece, Barbara. She is survived by her sister, Ferne Sharp of Woodbine, Iowa; nine nieces and nephews; and many other friends. Respectfully submitted for other researchers ©The Dunlap Reporter 2006

Valley, Harrison County, Iowa, Sunday morning, July 14, 1889, Ephram Brandriff, age 67. The deceased was born in New Jersey in 1822, and came west in 1861, stopping in Omaha, Neb., in which place he remained until 1864 when he moved to this county and settled on a large farm near Modale, where he continued to reside until his health begain to fail him, and last year he concluded to leave the farm and moved to this city, having bought the beautiful home of B. F. Blythe, on McGavern street where he died. He had been a sufferer with that terrible disease known as Bright's disease, and for some months his family and friends had lost hope in his recovery. He was a man of high moral character, having the respect of all who knew him, and died regretted by the entire community. The funeral took place from his late residence, conducted by Rev. J. B. Murch, of the Baptist Church,and his body was followed to its last resting place in the Calhoun Cemetery, by a large number o! f relatives and friends. Submitters note: Ephraim Brandriff headstone is actually in the Brandriff family plot in Rose Hill Cemetery, Misssouri Valley, IA. I do not know if he was buried at Calhoun cemetery, and then moved later or not. His headstone can be seen at www.iowagravestones.org within the next cple of days. Purcell, 55, who passed away Febraury 14. Elder Francis Harper Sr. and Rev. Milton Dawson officiated at the services. Music was furnished by Ray Sauvain, with Mrs. James Cotton as organist,. Bearers were Morris Gage, Howard McLaughlin, W. W. Lowrey, Dwayne Walker, William Smith and Norman Hulsebus. Interment was in the Woodbine cemetery. Wallace Rolland Purcell was born May 26, 1912 to Joe Francis and Oma Shannon Purcell near Glenwood. He lived near the Woodbine areea most of his childhood and you adult years, and graduated from Woodbine High School in the spring of 1930. On July 31, 1935 he married Angie Schneider, daughter of Lawrence and Emma Schneider. One daughter, Linda, and three sons, Larry, Jerry and Lynn were born to this union. Wallace lived nearly all of his adult life in Woodbine. He passed away on February 14, 1968, at the Jennie Edmundson Hospital, Council Bluffs, after many years of serious illness. Survivors include his father, Joe F. Purcell; two sisters, Mrs Elmer Cohrs and Mrs. Cyril Barsby; a brother, Carl; his wife Angie; daughter, Linda; sons, Larry, Jerry and Lynn; two granddaughters; two grandsons, many other relatives and friends.

Kuen October 25, 1930 - October 7, 2006 Service: Friday, October 13, 2006 1:30 PM Graveside Services Magnolia Cemetery Magnolia, IA Paul F. Kuen was born October 25, 1930, to Frances and Wilma (Point) Kuen in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Paul was a playful and sensitive boy and wanted to make sure everyone was happy. His parents nicknamed him “Doug.” Paul served his country and enlisted in the United States Army during the Korean War. This war changed his life forever. After his honorable discharge he was admitted into the Mental Institution in Norwalk, Iowa. He was transferred to the Veteran’s Home in Knoxville, Iowa and on January 16, 2002, Paul was transferred to Westmont Care Center in Logan, Iowa. Paul enjoyed his life at Westmont. He took his job very seriously in making other people smile. He liked to surprise the employees by giving them “gifts” of apples, pop, cards, and the most treasured gift of all, his smile. He loved music of all types and he enjoyed playing the guitar and singing ~ especially the song “You are my Sunshine.” This song will always echo in the halls of Westmont. Paul died on Saturday, October 7, 2006, at Community Memorial Hospital in Missouri Valley, Iowa attaining the age of 75 years 11 months, and 12 days. Paul was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Bill Kuen ~ who also served his country for three terms during the Viet Nam War dieing at the age of 38 years old from Agent Orange. Paul is survived by his sister, Vernell Klemp of Henderson, Nevada; and many other relatives and friends. Frances graduated from Dow City High School in 1932 and attended college in Cedar Falls for one year. She spent a number of years working in La Jolla, California, Seattle, Washington and several summers in North East Harbor, Maine as a maid. While living in Maine, she was given a ride to the store by John D. Rockefeller. However, she didn’t realize who he was until after the ride. She returned to Woodbine in 1959, living with and helping her parents. Her father died in 1960 and her mother in 1975. Frances was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Woodbine. She loved her flowers and her garden. She had around 80 peony plants; with her first one given to her from Herbert White in 1966. He gave her some lilacs the same year. Frances died on Tuesday, October 10, 2006, at Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine, Iowa at the age of 93 years, one month, and eight days. Frances was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Howard; three sisters, Mildred, Grace, and Lois; and niece Barbara. She is survived by her sister, Ferne Sharp of Woodbine, Iowa; nine nieces and nephews; and many other friends. Funeral services were held Oct. 4 at 10 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Missouri Valley with Pastor Gerald Firby officiating. Organist was Barb Sherer and vocalist David Dickinson. Selections were, "Amazing Grace" and "In the Garden." Honorary casket bearer was Richard Walentine. Casket bearers were Freddy Turner, David Klutts, Lynn Kline, Dean Fuller, Kelly Turner and Devin Walentine. Final resting place was Oaklawn Cemetery in Oakland. Peggy was born April 22, 1951 in Council Buffs to Donald and Barbara (Olesen) Turner. She attended and graduated in 1969 from the Oakland High School in Oakland. Peggy attended Iowa State and graduated in 1973 with a degree in communications. She was employed with WOWT in Omaha, Neb. She attended Buena Vista College and attained her teaching degree. Peggy taught school in the Omaha Public Schools and the Missouri Valley Public Schools, where she taught special education in the middle school. She attended Dana College in Blair, Neb. Where she earned her masters degree. Peggy enjoyed her dogs, cooking, decorating for the holidays and riding in the Model A Club. Survivors include her son Garrett Klutts and wife Melissa of Missouri Valley; mother Barbara Huff of Oakland; sister Debby Walentine and husband Richard of Ft. Calhoun, Neb.; brothers Fred Turner of Omaha, Neb., Kelly Turner and wife Dawn of Oakland; many nieces and nephews. The Hennessey-Aman Funeral Home in Missouri Valley was in charge of the arrangements.

Mick was born in Grand Island, Neb., on Feb. 13, 1922, to George Francis and Mabel (Harding) Sarratt. Mick was raised and lived, until his retirement, in Council Bluffs and Crescent, Iowa, and moved to Phoenix in 1988. While in Iowa, Mick was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corp in 1941 and enlisted in the U.S. Army in September 1942. He served as a sergeant in the 750th Tank battalion during their campaigns in the Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe. His Battalion helped to liberate the Nordhausen concentration camp on April 10, 1945, a day he never forgot. Mick worked most of his adult life in Iowa, operating cranes and other heavy equipment, and he was a proud member of Council Bluffs Local 234 Union of Operating Engineers. He farmed near Crescent, Iowa, for many years. When he bought his farm in the 1960s, he was surprised to learn that it had once belonged to his great-grandfather Benjamin Harding, an early Iowa pioneer. Mick was an avid hunter and outdoors man, a! nd he most loved the mountains around New Castle, Colo., where he spent many happy hunting trips. His wife, Lucille, predeceased him in February 2006. He leaves to mourn his passing two daughters, Marcia McGinn (Barry) and Mona Knight of Phoenix, grandchildren Megan Fairchild (Kirk) of North Carolina, and Jason Knight of Denver, also great-granddaughter, McKenna Pierce of North Carolina; brother, Mannie (Joan) Sarratt and sister, Betty (Jack) Cummings; sister-in-law, Jennie Sarratt of Council Bluffs, several nieces and nephews, and many friends. Mick chose to be cremated and his remains taken to Colorado. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The National Wildlife Federation. Memorial stones will be placed at Hazel Dell Cemetery, Crescent, Iowa, for Mick and Lucy Sarratt.
