Classification: Death Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/ok.2ADE/1953 Message Board Post: Me & my husband get a kick out of reading an article "Out of the Past" published in our town newspaper here in Sidney, OH. The information published in it is compliled by the Shelby County Historical Society (937-498-1653) www.shelbycountyhistory.org. I know how hard it is to do research on family history, as I've been doing some myself. I ran across this unusual name so I thought this article might help out anyone doing research on this particular person, so I wanted to post it on the Throckmorton Message Board. This article was published in the Sidney Daily News yesterday January 27, 2003. -75 Years Ago- Dr. J.A. Throckmorton, pioneer resident and for many years the leading dentist in this city, passed away at his apartments on the east side of the public square Sunday afternoon. Dr. Throckmorton was born in Virginia. When the civil war broke out he donned the uniform of a Union soldier and marched with patriotic pride to the front serving in the activities in the closing battles about Petersburg and Richmond and was a Appomattox when General Lee surrendered to General Grant and the war ended. At the close of the war he taught school for a time and then emigrated with his parents to Ohio settling on a farm bought in Shelby County a few miles north of Hardin. Just previous to the inauguration of President Roosevelt about twenty years ago he made the famous horseback ride between Sidney and Troy in which he gained national renown in exceeding the record made by President Roosevelt for the same distance by serveral minutes. He was an active member of Neal Post G.A.R. and w! as a regular attendant at all the State of National G.A.R. Encampments. I hope this might be beneficial to someone searching out there!
