I'm happy to tell you that you are closer than you think. The Jacob Surface in question was listed on the 1850 census as Zerface and his antecedants were also known as Zerfass. Johannes Zerfass "John Ulrich Surface" was born in 1735 in Germany, probably Coblentz and died in 1805 in Augusta county VA . About 1755 he married Mary Seiders "Siders" in Lehigh county Penn. They had two children, John and Michael, both born in Penn. The familly then moved to VA where several other children were born and later moved to Ohio.
