May 19, 1904.--OBITUARY.--Died May 12, 1904, Austin Fectic Knox, and was buried in the Rector cemetery, May 16, 1904. A brief service was held at the grave conducted by Rev. Lippincott. The deceased was born in Greenbryar County, Virginia, July 15, 1827. He joined the M. E. church when a young man and was an earnest, faithful worker for Christ as long as he was physically able. He once owned a half interest in the old homestead and was quite well to do, but much sickness and many reverses finally exhausted his means and he being a single man was removed to the county home where he remained until he was called to meet the loved ones gone before. In his death the last of a noted and much respected pioneer family has passed away. The family consisted of James Knox Sr., and wife and three sons, James Jr., Austin F. and Harvey, and one daughter, Maria. They were all born in Virginia. First moved to Ohio and then all but the daughter to Saline county, Missouri, and in 1854, came to this county settling on the farm one fourth of a mile south of the town of Knox. This farm was once considered one of the finest in the county. Mr. Knox and his family moved here with oxen teams which was the common way of traveling at that time. Several years later Mrs. Maria Perkins, their daughter, then a widow, came from Ohio and lived wihth them until her death in March 1881. Nothwithstanding they were all born in a slave state, they were very loyal to the north and much opposed to slavery. James, Jr., was a soldier during the war of the Rebellion, serving in Company "E", 29th Iowa. James since entertained very positive opinions in regard to the question of slavery and secession, and was not averse to expressing them. The Knox P. O. was named for James who was the first postmaster. The town was also named for this family.
