July 23, 1925. "CHARLES W. SHELDON". -- Charles (sic) Woodruff Sheldon was born at Rodman, near Watertown, New York, September 7th, 1847 and died at his home near Percival, July 15th, 1925 at the age of 77 years 10 months and 8 days. With the passing of this pioneer resident of Fremont county there comes to an end the life of one who has been identified with much of the history of this section. Coming here at about the end of the Civil war period, the Sheldon, Rogers and Hawley families had a large part in the development of this county. Clark Sheldon was sixteen years old when he came with his parents to the home which they made west of what is now Percival and known for many years as Civil Bend. Here on March 13th, 1872, he was united in marriage to Miss Emma Rogers, whom he had known before the familes left New York, and here the early home was established, later being transferred to the present site. For forty-four years the same farm has been the home of the family and here most of the joys and sorrows of life have come to them. To this marriage union two children were given: Hattie, who later became Mrs. Charles Chizek, and Jay Sheldon, who has lived in the home farm and been in partnership with his father in its operation. The daughter, Hattie, passed on into the other life in May 1911, leaving four children, two of whom , Irene and Chester, the former now Mrs. Floyd Birkby, were taken into the Sheldon home and became a part of it. Besides the invalid wife, and son who are so sorely bereaved, the deceased is survived by four brothers, Charles (sic), Ed and Till of Percival, and Will of Burlington; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Mr. Sheldon became a member of the Baptist church in Percival about twenty-five years ago. On March 13, 1922, Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary under peculiar and saddening circumstances, their beautiful home which had stood for many years on the site of the present home having been destroyed by fire. Many of those present at the funeral remember the courage and hopefulness shown by this couple under these discouraging circumstances and have seen the determination displayed in the making of another home in the evening of life. As a neighbor and friend, Clark (sic) Sheldon was ever ready to render aid and helpful service and he will be long remembered for his unselfishness. The funeral services were held at the home Friday, July 17th, and were in charge of E.H.Harrison, an old friend of the family, assisted by Rev. Ross of Percival. Iterment was in the beautiful cemetery at Neberaska City. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
