April 18, 1940. -- A group of WPA workmen have been straightening the course of Mill creek in the vicinity of the former Mill creek schoool south of Riverton. The creek has been widened and the banks smoothed. Formerly there was a flour mill about a quarter mile northeast of the schoolhouse which was operated by Silas Lamb and later by Jake Lewis. "The old swimmin' hole" was located near the mill also. N.B.: Cook's Mill is a historical site, it having been in operation from the time southern Fremont county was considered a part of Holt county, Missouri. The government surveyor located this mill when laying out the sectional lines in that particular township, and now this serves to locate other points of interest in the area. This work of straightening Mill Creek must have been the work of the CCC boys. -- W.F. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
