August 8, 1929. "Former Supervisor Dead".--John D. Ross, 77, died at his home in Walnut township, south of Imogene, August 1, following an illness of a lingering nature from which he had suffered for the past four years. Mr. Ross died suddenly, however, sitting on the front porch at his home after he had partaken of the noonday meal. Mr. Ross served two terms as a member of the board of supervisors, from 1910 to 1915, being chairman in 1912 and 1915. For fifty years he was secretary of the Walnut township school board, a position without monetary return but to which Mr.Ross gave scrupulous attention for a half century. In all his contacts with the public the deceased was considerate of the people for whom and with whom he was working. Coming to this county at an early date, he has seen much progress made in every line of endeavaor and he was ever alert to these changes, and was characteristically progressive. He was the son of James and Sarah (Dickey) Ross and was born at Malone, New York, April 22, 1852. He came to Iowa in 1871. March 23, 1875 he was united in marriage to Mary Alice Jenkins. Following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Ross lived near Farragut for a time and then moved to the farm south of Imogene which has since been their place of residence. Besides his wife, nine children survive him: Josephine at home; Florence of Hollywood, California; Leonard of San Diego, California; Gertrude and Cora of Shenandoah; Allan of Belle Fourche, South Dakota; John D. Jr., at home; Eugene of Mount Vernon, South Dakota; Sarah of Shenandoah; two brothers, Thomas and Henry of Shenandoah, and two sisters, Mrs. Rachel Higgins and Mrs. Addie Farwell, both near Shenandoah. Funeral services were conducted at the home Saturday afternoon by Rev. John W. Todd. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
