April 18, 1940. -- John Johnson of Riverton will observe his 81st birthday Sunday, April 14. He came to America from Denmark with a sister when he was 22 year, his parents having come to this country previously. His wife also came from Denmark. Mr. Johnson has lived in the same house in Riverton for 58 years. Formerly he assisted his brother, Chris, in operating a brick yard west of town and many of the brick walks, foundations of houses and store buildings in Riverton are made from bricks manufactured at their brick yard. Later he purchased the entire business from his brother and operated the kiln alone. He farmed 40 acres of land south of Riverton until his retirement two years ago. In the 58 years he has lived in America he has only summoned a physician for himself twice, and one of these times, during the past witner, when the local physician was called to his home for him for the first time since the physician came to Riverton 30 years ago. Since the death of Mrs. Johnson ten years ago, he has managed the home for himself and son, Lynn, who lives with him. His chidren are: Luther, section foreman on the Missouri Pacific line at Nebraska City; Mrs. Gertrude Mortimore of Palmyra, Nebr.; Mrs. Anna Scott of west of Riverton; Leslie, a partner in the Ford garage in Riverton; Everett, a clerk in St. Joseph, MO.; and Lynn, a store clerk in Riverton. He has 15 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Mr. Johnson is very active and this week he has been setting posts and splitting wood for use next winter.
