"Mortuary Matters". Death of Mrs. Thomas Lusby.--Mrs. Thomas Lusby, whose funeral took place on Wednesday of this week, was married to her husband who survives her, on March 19th, 1858. Mr. Lusby was a native of Lincolnshire, England, and was born on April 6th, 1862 (sic). He was a brick mason and built the first Baptist church of Sidney--that the first brick church erected in Fremont county. He also built the first brick house in Hamburg as well as a large proportion of the brick buildings in Riverton. To Mr. and Mrs. Lusby were born three children two of whom are still living: Geo. W., born Feb. 12, 1865, and Charles W., born Feb. 5, 1860. Mrs. Lusby, the subject of this sketch, came here with her husband (sic) in April, 1841, where there were but two white white families in Iowa west of the Nodaway river, and when the early settlers did their trading and milling in Savanah, Missouri. It is recorded that in one winter they were compelled to beat out their corn to make bread. Mrs. Lusby used to tell of a Mr. Gard, a Christian minister, as being the first preacher in the county, preaching at PLeasant Grove and perfomring the baptismal rite in a small stream near by. Mrs. Lusby is a daughter of Jacob Thomas who brought the first loom to the county and on which Mrs. Lusby claims she did the first weaving. Funeral services were held at Hamburg on Wdnesday of this week and the remains were brought to Sidney to be interred in the cemtery here. A large funeral procession accompanied the remains, arriving at about 12 noon, about one hour in advance of the anticipated time, as mentioned in another place in this issue as explaining why more of our citizens did not meet the concourse at the cemetery.
