December 31, 1931.--James Ballard was born in Polk county, Iowa, in 1845 and died Saturday, December 26, 1931, at his home in Bartlett at the age of 86 years, 1 month and 2 days. He enlisted in the civil war in 1863 and was mustered out in 1865. For the next few years he drove cattle between Missouri and South Dakota. In 1868 he was married to Jane Greenlee and went to live on his homestead near Anderson, Iowa, where they lived for forty years, then moved to Huron, South Dakota, where they lived two years, then moving to their present home at Bartlett twenty-six years ago. He was a kind husband and loving father, always ready to help his children or anyone else in need. He leaves to mourn his loss four children, Mrs. Edgar Adair of Des Moines, Mrs. Ethel Mooney, New York City, Benton and Earl Ballard of Bartlett; seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. A military funeral was held for him the services at the Christian church at Bartlett conducted by Elder Charles Aitken. Burial was in Mount Zion cemetery beside his wife, who preceded him in death about two years ago.
