Feb. 11, 1931. "Thurman News".--Death called Mrs. Mary Clapper Wednesday and her years of suffering were finally ended. For the past ten years she has known she was afflicted with concer of the liver and at times all through the years has suffered intense pain. For the last few months she had scarcely been free from constant suffering. Mary Burtiss, daughter of Ira Burtiss and Azurbah (Rinehart), was born in Grundy county, Illinois, Sept. 12, 1865, and passed away at her home Wednesday June 3, 1931. When only 8 months old she was brought by her parents to Fremont county near Bartlett, where she grew to womanhood and was married in 1882 to William Clapper. They began housekeeping in the Dutch Hollow neighborhood east of town and had resided in that locality ever since. Seven children were born to this union: Ira, whose home is in Walthill, Nebraska; Mrs. Eva Davis of Bartlett; Ethel who died in infancy; Herschel who lives southwest of town; Lawrence and Alfred who are at home and Raymond who died from cancer a few years ago. Funeral services were conducted by Elder H. N. Pierce of Bartlett at the Latter Day Saints church east of Thurman and interment was made in the Thurman cemetery. Beside the husband and five children who mourn her departure she leaves two sisters, Mrs. Fannie Spidell of Tabor and Mrs. Jane Hanson of Walthill, Nebraska, and one brother, George Burtiss, of Hewlitt, New York.
