Many stones are missing. I've also added names using obituaries & WPA records that state someone was buried at Parsley. I've made several visits to the cemetery to photograph headstones. It's a work in progress be/ca I'm trying to add more than just names and dates. I have uploaded a headstone for Amanda Cones Barnard. I found and created a link to her husband, JUDGE James Barnard who remarried and is buried in Greene Co, Missouri. I believe Amanda & James had 3 children. James F b. 1860 is buried at Parsley and has a stone. Indiana b. 1856 is buried at Parsley but I could not find a headstone. Laura b.1857 moved to Missouri with her father and his 2nd wife. 1. [IAFREMON] Daniel Sanford Taylor (5/14/1837 - 4/6/1938) reminisces.
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: farwellwalter Surnames: Taylor, Cowles, Bassett, Fletcher, Moore, Kirk, Parkhurst, Bourbonnais Classification: biography Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.iowa.counties.fremont/7527/mb.ashx Message Board Post: FREMONT COUNTY HERALD. May 17, 1907. "DAN TELLS OF THE EARLY TIMES".-- On Wednesday morning of this week the Herald reporter saw a man hurrying across the southeast corner of the square and on closer observation recognized Dan Taylor and knowing that Mr. Taylor generally has something of interest for the press, he accompanied us to our office and after a few moments reflection of past events he began to tell us bits of history along the pathway of his eventful life. Only on last Tuesday the 14th he closed the 70th milestone of his age and at that quite advanced age he is strong and active and bids fair to enjoy the coming of several birthdays and we all hope that it may be so. Mr. Taylor is native of Franklin county, Arkansas, and dates his birth back to May 14, 1837. His father was born in Richmmond, Virginia and his mother was a Tennesseeian so the subject of this sketch says that he comes by his democracy honestly and but few would do more for good government than Uncle Dan. His life has been one of considerable unevenness in the way of adventure as in 1859 he made a trip to the Cherry Creek gold diggins of Colorado where Denver is and in 1864 he was on the western plains doing services for the government in subduing the Indians who were then commmitting serious depredations. The conversation finally turned to events in Fremont county and a very fine and accurate description of early days was given. Especially did he speak of the first courthouse built in Sidney. It was a frame building and the lumber was hauled from the Pin Hook saw mill near the Egypt schoolhouse four mires north of Bartlett. The contractors and builders of this public edifice were LaFayette and Harvy Cowles and their tools were shipped from Gallipolis, Ohio. Mr. Taylor now has in his possesion the tool chest owned by the above named Cowles. Mr. Taylor states that in speaking of the first courthouse in Sidney many think of the one built by Bassett of Council Bluffs which was finished in May 1860 and on the completion of this building a public dance was given. Among those in attendance at the dance from Atchison county, Missouri were Dan Taylor, Jake Fletcher and Dan Moore. Uncle Dan says that he was never really fond of dancing but in the general round-up of a cotilion he was with 'em. We cannot enumerate all the incidents spoken of by our worthy visitor but suffice to say that the call he made us was highly appreciated and that the latch string to the door of the Herald office always responds to the touch of Uncle Dan. N.B.: Taylor's reference saying he had been living in Atchison county, Missouri in 1860 when Fremont county's second court house was finished, probably identifies where his first three children (Jennie, Ida Mae, Etta E.) were born. Also, his first wife was a Kirk, and the Atchison county cemetery book has quite a few entries in the index under this name. Secondly, his death notice said he enlisted in the Civil War and was fighting Indians in the Far West. Dan Taylor's daughter Anna C. (Taylor) Parkhurst, who was born in 1865, says she was born in Nebraska City. Put the two facts together and we have a strong reason for thinking he had served with a unit from the State of Nebraska during this period. (AND having lived to be 100 years old, I'm wondering if he ever applied for a Civil War pension?) Thirdly, he says the lumber for the second Fremont county courthouse came from the Pin Hook saw mill four miles north of Bartlett. This statement also make sense: Francis Bourbonnais, resident of the Half Breed Farm neighborhood had a woodyard for steamboats just north of Calument Point, in the very southwestern corner of present Mills county. Both would have required the presence of a large grove of trees from which needed lumber could be obtained. I see the spirit of "Young America" as being eagerly grasped by Dan Taylor. This philosophy was the 'rage' in the 1850's. His soul was free to do as he wished, his mind could think whatever made sense to him and to him alone, and I'll bet his reference to the government which allowed this freedom was something he greatly prized. He was responsible for what he did, and he alone. Democracy was very young and was just establishing itself. Dan Taylor was also young.....I'd like to be able to fully grasp what Fremont county's "Golden Age" was like!-- W.F. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [IAFREMON] Daniel Sanford Taylor, b. in Booneville, Ark. -d. in Englewood, CO. in April 1938 ae 101 years
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: farwellwalter Surnames: Taylor, Liggett Classification: death Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.iowa.counties.fremont/4113.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: THE SIDNEY ARGUS-HERALD. April 14, 1938. "DAN TAYLOR, FORMER RESIDENT, BURIED IN COLORADO LAST WEEK".--Daniel D. Taylor, who died in Englewood, Colo., Friday, just short of his 101st birthday, formerly lived near Sidney and had charge of the Fremont county home. He was an interesting and familiar personage to the boys and girls of the community for not only was he an old Indian fighter but he had had part of one arm amputated. The story was that Dan had the rest of his arm carefully wrapped up and laid away, to be placed in his coffin when he should die. For he wanted both his hands when he got into the other world, he said. Mr. Taylor had an iron hook he made himself and in some fashion fastened to his stump of an arm, that he could use with great dexterity. He was, therefore, an object of the greatest curiosity and admiration to Sidney youths. When Mr. Taylor was placed in his casket last week, relatives reverently placed beside him a package containing the polished bones of his right forearm which had been amputated just below the elbow 56 years before as the result of an accident in a machine shop at Hamburg, and which had accompanied him wherever he had traveled since that time. Mr. Taylor would point out to sceptical observers that possession of the bones represented the physical union to him and that even though severed from his body, they were apart of him and must always remain so. Mr. Taylor was born in Booneville, Ark. Toward the end of the Civil War he enlisted in the army and was involved in mamy Indian battles. Most of his adult life was spent in Nebraska and Iowa. He and Mrs. Taylor moved to Wyoming in 1916 and from there to Colorado in 1922 to be near their sons, J. W. and J. D. Taylor, both of Englewood. He is survived by his wife, 91, his two sons, and three daughters. N.B.: While recollections are interesting, in 2010 it would have been nice if more hard data had been included! But the chances are great that, since he lived to be 101 years old, he would have been on a government pension to which his Civil War service might have entitled him. If this turns out to be the case, he would have been required to outline his war and Indian fighting experiences so the pension bureau could verify his claims. But to the people of 2010, the Taylor experiences fighting the Indians of the Far West would be a gold mine of information. Too, as the steward of the Fremont County Home, he would have been the next door neighbor of my great grandfather, George Biglow Liggett. The Liggett home place was the next farm east of the County Home, a little over three miles southeast of Sidney. They must have known each other! The present Sidney golf course is just to the west. -- W.F. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My notes seem to agree with Keith! My notes say that Daniel S. Taylor (born May 14, 1837 in Franklin county, Ark) married Sarah Kirk (born Dec. 21, 1842 -d. Sept. 10, 1873)-- and -- were the parents of Annie C. Taylor who married Dr. W. H. Parkhurst at Hamburg on June 26, 1884. Dr. Parkhurst was the son of Roland T. and Lucy (Cellers) Parkhurst. When the Hamburg Reporter of Sept. 19, 1996 carried an article about the deplorable condition of some on the grave stones in the Hamburg Cemetery, it illustrated the article with a picture of the tomb stone of D. S. Taylor, saying the stone said he had died in 1878. To add to the confusion, my post "No. 267: Pieces of the Biographical Puzzle" included the mere statement that D. S. Taylor and his brother T. F. Taylor of Florence, Kansas, had not seen each other for 44 years. I had no dates for this note, nor even the source. A reply to "No. 267.." said that elucidation would be appreciated!
