I have been searching for my G-Grandmothers 2nd husband, Isaac Conner b. 1837 Indiana. This has been a real puzzle for me. My G-Grandmother, Della Maria Reeves was a pretty religious Methodist woman who lived in Fremont County Iowa most all her life. She first married Burwell Irwin and after he died in 1878, she married Isaac Conner in 1886 at Rawlings, Kansas. This is the puzzle. It is hard for me to believe she went all the way to Kansas, BEFORE she got married. The following is an index of the marriage records of Rawlins County, Kansas. These records can be found at the county courthouse which is located in Atwood, Kansas 67730. CONNER, Isaac m. Irwin, Maria 1886 After Isaac died abt. 1891 she returned to Fremont. Corresponding with a Conner descendant, she can't figure out why Isaac would travel from Kansas to Fremont or how he met up with Maria. I am thinking that maybe Isaac Conner and the John Conner of Fremont might be related and that is how she met Isaac. Any help or comments appreciated. Dave
This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: farwellwalter Surnames: Leeka, Forney, Benner, Clapper, Ettleman, Forney, Study, Surface, Grove, Bourbonnais, Waubonsie Classification: lookup Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.iowa.counties.fremont/7543/mb.ashx Message Board Post: While 'thinking' about the above post (Biographical sketch of William Leeka), it occurred to me that I should check out "Forney's Five Family Records". This volume is a genealogy of the Benner, Clapper, Ettleman, Forney and Study families which I obtained from Thelma Surface, mother-in-law of my brother Bob. FIRST CONSIDERATION; Page 338 speaks of the family of Leonard Study and wife Sarah E. Grove. In 1846, his widowed mother accompanied the Mormons across Iowa to the Missouri river region. Here, her oldest son David joined the Mormon Battalion (other boys in the family were too young), and the remainder of the family started south from Traders Point. When they got to the Thurman area, they stopped there: "They were among the first settlers in that community and their first home was a log cabin, situated on land just south of Plum Creek and within the present limits of the town". They lived here for four years. READ THIS AS: This young family lived in an OLD LOG CABIN which they found on Plum Creek! SECOND CONSIDERATION: On page 29 of the "Forney's Five Family Record", we read that Christian Clapper left Trader's Point and traveled down river 12 miles "and bought out an old Pottawattamie chief in the fall of 1846". Since there are but three townships in Mills county, and since Traders Point is known as being in the northwestern corner of Mills county, this location puts Christian Clapper in the neighborhood just north of Calumet Point, and in the southwestern corner of Mills county. Now, bring up the post of November 29, 2003 entitled "Where The Half-Breed Farms neighborhood was. Northermost". After reading this it becomes apparent that Christian Clapper had bought out the well known Bourbonnais woodyard in the Egypt neighborhood of southwest Mills county. Bourbonnais was not really an Indian chief, but he was an outstanding member of Waubonsie's band. His 'place of public accommodation' was even white-washed, and must have been a most noticeable establishment. THIRD CONSIDERATION: In 1846, many of the Mormon families moved into old log cabins which the departing French families left behind when they emigrated to their new homes in Kansas with the Pottawattomies. Author: farwellwalter Surnames: Leeka, Seward, Cooper, Hoecken Classification: biography Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.iowa.counties.fremont/7542/mb.ashx Message Board Post: FREMONT COUNTY HERALD. Oct. 2, 1902. "WILLIAM LEEKA". -- The familiar feature of the above portrait will be readily reognized by most of our readers as he is known to a large acquaintance in every part of the county and especially in the northern part where his name is associated with the pioneers who braved the hardships incident to pioneer life. He was born in Clinton county, Ohio, June 14, 1830 and is of German lineage. In the spring of 1839 the parents emigrated from Clinton county, Ohio, to Van Buren county, Iowa, making the journey down the Ohio river and up the Mississippi and Des Moines rivers. After spending a few years in this sparsely settled country, the family moved to Holt county, MO., and resided there about one year. In November 1848 another move was inaugurated which brought the family to Fremont county, Iowa, where the father, John Leeka, purchased 160 acres of land lying along Plum Creek about two miles east of where Thurman is now located, for $1.25 per acre. DURING THE WINTER OF '48 THE FAMILY RESIDED IN AN OLD LOG HOUSE WHICH STOOD A SHORT DISTANCE SOUTH OF THE PRESENT RESIDENCE but the winter months were improved by the father and two sons, David and William in cutting and hewing logs for the erection of a better house at the earliest convenience the spring weather would permit. In the meantime another tract of land comprising 240 acres had been added which now made the new possesion even 300 acres. At this place the mother died on June 30, 1880 at the age of about 82 years, and on January 10, 1892 the father departed this life at the advanced age of 90 years. August 28, 1873, Mr.Leeka was united in marriage to Miss Rachel S. Seward, of Van Buren county, Iowa. To this union six children were born and all are yet living. They have not forgotten the admonition of fond parents and neglected their educational advantages as two of the sons are graduates of a normal school at Lincoln, Neb., and Miss Lorena has taken special work in Drake University at Des Moines. The present residence, which was begun in October 1892 and finished the following spring so that the family took their abode therein, is one of the finest farm houses in the state; the building is attractive in architecture, neat in adornment, both on the exterior and interior. It is 46x40 feet in dimension and two stories high with ceilings 10 and 8 1/2/ feet high. The location is on a fine elevation against a bluff which services as a protection from atmospheric danger coming from the north or west and it also lends enchantment to the surrounding scene. Much might be said of this magnificent home but pen or brush is inadequate to do full justice. Mr. Leeka is quite liberal in his political views but was formerly a supporter of the republican party. He has held different offices--being the first clerk of Scott township, county commissioner and justice of the peace. He is a member and holds the position of elder in the reorganized church of Latter Day Saints. He is a liberal supporter of all worthy institutions; the community at large and indiviudals in particular could vouch for his spirit of benevolence and they do by their estimation and appreciation. His landed interest comprises 3,200 acres in Fremont county, 1,450 acres in Kansas and 320 acres in Oklahoma, making a practical aggregate of 5,000 acres which he has acquired through his own effort save, perhaps, the old homestead of 400 acres purchased by his father. N.B.: Read thoughtfully what Leeka was saying in the third paragraph where he says the Leeka family lived in an old log cabin during the winter of 1849 - 1849. (The capital letters are mine.) How can one explain his statement that there was and OLD LOG CABIN standing along Plum Creek in November 1848? It stood just a short distance south of the home built by the Leeka's in October 1892. Undoubtedly, he is referring to a cabin left behind when the Half Breed Farm neighborhood was vacated when the Pottawattomie Indians left Fremont county for their new homes in Kansas in 1846. Stephen Cooper said there were "half breeds" living in the present day Thurman area; and thanks to Father Hoecken's baptismal records we know some of the French families living there. Perhaps I should reiterate that William Leeka's picture accompanies the original article.-- W.F. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Sept. 4, 1903 in St. Joseph, MO; married ANNA MEYERS at Fairfield, Iowa in 1849; buried at Hamburg.....He was the maternal grandson of General John Andre and Mary (Harris) Hanna; she was the daughter of John Harris, founder of Harrisburg, PA......In 1847, Samuel Jacobs came west as a government civil engineer. In 1849 was surveying the Des Moines River. He published the "Jeffersonian" at Fairfield, Iowa; then he surveyed the route of the C. B. & Q. Railroad across Iowa; in 1865 came to Council Bluffs as real estate agent. Surveyed the Council Bluffs and St. Joseph Railroad. In 1869 moved to Hamburg, Iowa, where he sold lots. CHILDREN: 1. Mrs. S. F. Hoskins of Peoria, Illinois 2. Mrs. H. H. Borchers of Hamburg, Iowa 3. Mrs. A. L. Maxwell of Portland, Oregon 4. Mrs. J. V. Wadley of Chillicothe, MO 5. Miss Sarah Hanna (Jacobs?) 6. Miss Henrietta Hanna (Jacobs?) N.B.: I must have copied numbers 5 and 6 incorrectly: It seems their last name should have been "Jacobs". The Des Moines river surveying project was a dream of building the Des Moines river into an important commercial shipping lane. George Washington Lucas and Dr. William Dewey of Fremont county pushed through legislation in the Iowa State General Assembly which moved the capital from Iowa City to Des Moines; this change of location was based on the success of such a project which would result in Fort Des Moines becoming an important commercial center. The General Assembly did not count on the Interstate Commerce Commission's determination to make Chicago a center of an east-west railroad network wherein 40 per cent of all east-west railroad tracks would pass through Chicago. Back in 1855, the idea was for the main route for business coming from the Far West to turn southeast after reaching Fort Des Moines......BUT, thinking of Samuel Jacobs, note that Council Bluffs DID become the jumping off place of the continental railroad -- and -- the Council Bluffs to St. Joseph railroa! d is still in operation! -- W.F.
