June 8, 1922. CHARLES EUGENE ELLIS. -- Charles Eugene Ellis, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. L.Ellis died at his home in north Tabor on Tuesday afternoon, May 30th. Charles, familiarly known as "Chuck", was born in Tabor,Iowa on August 23, 1909. He had been in poor health since December, 1921, when it was discovered that he had leakage of the heart. Since that time his illness had gradullay become more severe until he was confined to his bed on March 3rd. The best of care and treatment was given him by his family and physicians but death was inevitable. During the long weeks of his illness although he suffered great pain, he was always kind and patient, greeting those who cared for him with ready smiles and witty remarks. Chuck was a clever and intelligent boy and a general favorite with all who knew him. He was well known and admired by the old as well as the young and was always willing to talk in his cheerful way with everyone. Although frail in body he was deeply interested in athletics, base ball being a passion with him. He knew all the finer points of the game, the best players, and their positions and could discuss these with anyone. He was dearly loved by his school mates, his teachers and by all who came in contact with him. His ready wit and happy disposition caused all who saw or spoke to him to feel happier for having known him. 1. [IAFREMON] William James Kilpatrick, b. near Middleton, Co. Armagh - d. May 23, 1922
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: farwellwalter Surnames: Kilpatrick, Marsh, Antrim, Matchett Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.iowa.counties.fremont/7559/mb.ashx Message Board Post: THE TABOR BEACON. June 8, 1922. "WILLIAM JAMES KILPATRICK". -- Funeral services were conducted for William James Kilpatrick at the home of brother, F. D. Kilpatrick. Rev. A. J. Meirhoff, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church conducted the services, and burial was made in the Malvern cemetery. A special choir, Mrs. J. M. Steele, Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Talbott and Dr. I. U. Parsons funished the music. The following obituary was read: William James Kilpatrick, the fifth from the oldest of a family of ten was born near Middletown in County Armagh, Ireland. When a young man he came to the U. S. A., and made his home for four years with an uncle living near Greenfield, Ill. He then made his home near Randolph, Iowa, with his sister, Martha and two brothers, Samuel and George. In 1884 he and Miss Stella Marsh of Edinburgh, Ohio, were united in marriage. Four years later they took a homestead eight miles from Otis, Colorado. This homestead was the beginning of their interest in a cattle ranch which during the twenty-nine years that it was their home was one of the finest in that section of the country,. In 1917 Mr. and Mrs. Kilpatrick gave up their active interest in the ranch and moved to Otis, Colorado. A few days before his death, William Kilpatrick was not in usual health; yet the Sunday before his death he attended both the morning and evening services of the church. Monday morning at three o'clock he called his wife as he was suddenly taken very ill. Mrs. Kilpatrick called medical aid immediately. A neighborning physician was called in for consultation but all that human hands could do was being done, Tuesday at 12:45 a.m., May 23rd, the end came. Mr. Kilpatrick leaves to mourn his death a devoted wife, a sister, Mrs. William Antrim, Boise, Idaho, and two brothers, Joseph Kilpatrick, Madison, Nebr., and Francis D. Kilpatrick, Malvern, Iowa. The five sisters-in-law are Mrs. Evelyn Kilpatrick, Tabor, Iowa; Mrs. Joseph Kilpatrick, Madison, Nebr.; Mrs. David Kilpatrick, Malvern, Iowa, Mrs. Ellizabeth Kilpatrick, Randolph, Iowa and Mrs. Julia D. Kilpatrick, Springfield, Mo. The two brothers-in-law are Mr. William Antrim, Boise, Colo., and Mr. Will Matchett, St. Joseph, Mo. Besides there is a host of nephews and nieces and friends. Mrs. William Kilpatrick was a Scotch_Irishman with noble characteristics. Words are futile when one attempts to do honor to a man who lived his life well. Mr. Kilpatrick's word in the business world was as good as his note. He was a successful business man that made friends. As a busines man he was not thinking only of himself and his wife, but the interest of Otis and the surrounding community. He was a true pioneer. He enjoyed seeing the grosperity of his neighbors. It was with a great deal of pride that he called the attention of his Iowa friends to the strides that the vicinity of Otis made in farming. His industry, foresight and expenditure of money has been a great factor in making Otis what it is today. Those who knew William Kilpatrick knew that his home was the essence of hospitality. The ranchman was always assured of his getting a word of good cheer, a good meal and lodging. The neighbor knew that he had a real friend in him. Many of Mr. Kilpatricks friends have bern restored to health under his hospitable roof, and the excellent climate of Colorado. He loved Colorado. It was a great delight to him to take his friends on a antelope junt or for a drive across the prairies. It is easy for some to become engrossed in the material things of a pioneer's life to the neglect of his spiritual growth, but this was not true of Mr. Kilpatrick. He was faithful to the hour of morning prayers. He loved to feed his spiritual life with reading the religious papers and the Bible. Eight miles each Sunday was not too far for him to drive to worship in the house of God. Since 1895, he has been an elder in the Presbyterian Church at Otis. He gave liberally of his money to further Christian Education. His belief in God expressed itself in a tangible way. He was very instruemntal in building a Mission three and one half miles from his ranch. This mission today is a independent church. A few years ago he took great pleasure in seeing the Presbyterian congregation at Otis housed in a beautiful church and a comfortable manse furnished for the Presbyterian minister. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: farwellwalter Surnames: Focht, Blakely, Anderson Classification: marriage Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.iowa.counties.fremont/7556/mb.ashx Message Board Post: FREMONT COUNTY HERALD. Feb. 22, 1923. -- "MARRIED AT LAURENS". -- On Thursday afernoon, February 15, at four o'clock the marriage of Miss Hulda Focht, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Focht of Sidney and Edward James Blakely of Randolph was quietly solemnized at the home of Mr. and Mrs. M. O. Anderson at Laurens, Iowa. Rev. Claude R. Cook of Randolph accompanied the groom to Laurens and performed the ceremony which united the two in bonds of matrimony. The couple left the same evening for Des Moines to spend their honeymoon and expect to be at home to their many friends on the Blakely farm near Randolph after March 15. Hulda is the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Focht and was born and raised here in this community and graduated from the local schools. She has been a very successful teacher and spent three years in Washington, D. C., during which time she was engaged in war work and later in the Internal Revenue office. For the past year she has been office assistant in the office of the Fremont County Farm Bureau where her capabilites were thoroughly tested and where she has made hosts of friends, being considered one of the best assistants in the state. Following the departure of the county agent she took over the work of the office and handled it in a very creditable manner and the Farm Bureau management is loath to part with her. She faithfully stayed by the Farm Bureau until the date set for her to assume the duties as housewife and matron. Mr. Blakely is a popular young man of Randolph and a highly esteemed citizen of his community. He is already a successful farmer and possesses ability which means even greater promise. The Herald cordially joins the host of friends of this young couple in wishing for them a smooth and pleasant way along the path of married life. August 8, 1929. "LAYING CONCRETE TO GET GOING BY FRIDAY. After Many Delays All Is Now In Readiness For Start Tomorrow. FORTY BIG TRUCKS HAULING". -- Following a week of busy preparations, pouring of cement on No. 3 (sic) will begin tomorrow, according to information from the resident engineer's office. Some delay in receiving machinery was encountered to prevent the work starting Monday, as was intended. Some last minute changes in water sources and repairs on the mixer will be completed so that operations will begin Friday without much doubt. A fleet of forty trucks under the supervision of J. W. Unton will be employed to haul the materials from the depot to the mixer. This number will gradually decrease as the distance of haul is lessened. A haul of approximately eight miles will be made at first, since that is the point of beginning. Water for the mixing will be obtained from McCammond's spring east of town and driven to the mixer through pipelines by a triplex pump capable of exerting 300 pounds pressure at the spring. Cement for the job will come in bulk this year and be unloaded on a platform which was completed Wednesday. Scales on the platform will weigh the amount of cement necessary for each load of sand and gravel. Last year the cement was shipped in sacks weighing approximately 100 pounds each.....etc... N.B.: "Eight miles east of the Sidney depot" would be near the Farragut intersection of the old highway between Sidney and Shenandoah. I don't know when No. 3 became known as Highway No. 2. McCammond's Spring is a new name to me. As I understand it, Toland Springs became the source of Sidney's water supply just before the first World War. Sidney obtained a 100-year lease of the Toland springs at that time. Perhaps the ownership of these springs changed between then and 1929. Thirdly, it appears that some cement had been layed in 1928. I wonder where this was? -- W.F. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
