Nov. 30, 1916.--The funeral of Mrs. Thomas Jobe, who died at her home in Sidney last Wednesday, was held Saturday afternoon at the Baptist church. The services were conducted by Elder J.P. Lucas, pastor, of the Christian church of Riverton, assisted by Rev. J.P. Thomas of Sidney. May (sic) Jordan was born in Ohio April 27, 1838, and came with her parents, Nathaniel Jordan and wife, to Jackson county, Iowa, when but a small child. When the gold excitement of '49 swept over the country her father went among the first gold seekers to California, the new Eldorado, where he died of mountain fever the following year. On February 7, 1961, Miss Jordan was married to Thomas H. Jobe of Sidney. The next year the young husband, leaving his wife and a little son three months old, enlisted in Company E, 29th Iowa infantry, and served as a soldier in the Civil War for 18 months. He then returned to Sidney, where he spent the remainder of his life, dying Febraury 26, 1898, at the age of 64. Mr. and Mrs. Jobe were the parents of five children, three of whom are still living: Charles M. of Omaha, Elmer A. of Macedonia, and U.V. of Detroit, Michigan. There are nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren, nearly all of whom were present at the funeral, also the two sons, Charles and Elmer, Mrs. Jobe also leaves two brothers, Nathaniel and Steve Jordan, who live here, and a sister, Mrs. Allison, of Council Bluffs. Another brother, Ike, went west 50 years ago and has not been heard from for some time. Mrs. Jobe's intimate acquaintances speak of her as one of the best of women and the best of neighbors. Her path was not always smooth and easy. She had her share of life's stormy weather, but she was always cheerful and courageous, and always looked on the bright side. She was very industrious and was noted for her generous and unselfish spirit--always doing something for others. She was a member of the Christian church ever since her girlhood days, and a constant reader of her bible and of religous papers, and always interested in church work. She was a lovable character and will be mourned by real friends.

Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ok.2ADE/1487.1.1 Message Board Post: Donna: It seems I have given you a bum steer: There is no newspaper called the THURMAN NEWS. Newspapers published in rural counties needed subscribers from all over the county if they desired to achieve any measure of financial success. In 1897, Sidney had two newpapers, "The Fremont County Herald" and the "Fremont County Sun". Each paper employed 'correspondents' (1) from various towns in the county, or, (2) from the rural neighborhoods in the county, and , sometimes had a 'local editor' for the town in which the paper was published. Since the first paper published in Thurman was put out from about 1900 up to 1905, you are out of luck when looking for something with an 1897 time-line. Your only hope is to find a paper published elsewhere which had hired a 'correspondent' from Thurman. Cross you fingers and hope that the correspondent was a good one, because some are so frustrating inasmuch their "news" consists of saying that Mrs. Smith visisted Mrs. Jones, period. One hundred years later, you haven't the slightest idea of whom they are. May I suggest you visit a large library which has a bibliography of Iowa newpapers, showing all that have been published and which are still available, where you might be able to read those which are available,-- and-- thus start the slow process of newpaper research. I've been doing this for forty years, probably, and have piles and piles of notes on people to whom I'm not even related. (I get easily side-tracked when I am looking at old newspapers!).....GOOD LUCK. I would think the sexton of the cemetery would have the plot of where there are graves, and who is buried there. Could the mayor of the town tell you who the sextion is?

His son Silas (died in Nemaha Co., NE)is buried beside him, son John (died in NE) married Elizabeth McKissick, and daughter Amanda (died in OK) married Nathan Chaney, whom we are pretty sure is one of the sons of John A. & Martha Clark Chaney. Levi and his 3 youngest sons are in the Fremont county census for 1870 and I think there are a total of 8 children from his first marriage to Mary Woolsey. I would appreciate it if you could tell me if any mention of Levi's death would be in a Fremont County paper.
