Surnames: Fleming, Gardner, Rankin, Cowden Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ok.2ADE/1545 Message Board Post: THE FREMONT COUNTY HERALD. March 26, 1909. "Obituary of F. M. Fleming".--Francis Marion Fleming was born in New York City December 31, 1844, and died at his home in Riverton, Iowa, March 12, 1909, aged 64 years 2 months and 11 days. His mother died when he was four years of age and after her death his father moved to Harrison, Illinois. In the year 1862 Mr. Fleming moved to Howard county, Iowa. Here he stayed about five years when he moved to Atchison, Kansas, where he lived two years. From Atchison he moved to Riverton where, with the exception of one year living in Maryville, Mo., he continued to reside until he passed into the great unseen life. On the 22nd of December, 1868, he was married to Miss Lavina Gardner at Linden, Mo. Eleven children were born to them, two of whom died when they were quite young; a daughter died about six years ago, and their son, Jesse, left them a year ago the 15th of last January. Six sons and one daughter remain to unite with their mother in bewailing the loss of a kind and affectionate father and husband. All of the children were present at the final obsequies of their father except one son living in Muncie, Ind., who was unable to be present. Mr. Fleming was baptized in the Methodist Episcopal church when he was a child, but farther than that there is no record of his holding any relation with any church. At least, for reason best known to himself, he did not affiliate with any of the churches in Riverton. On the 15th day of last December he left his home in his usual health to go to his work at Rankin & Cowden's elevator, where, about 20 minutes to 9 o'clock in the forenoon, he was stricken with paralysis. He was taken to his home, medical aid was immediately summoned and he was made as comfortable as his circumstances would allow. Although he never fully regained the use of either his physical or mental powers, yet, his splendid constitution enabled him to rally so that he was able to recognize his friends, partially undertstand what was said to him, and make efforts to talk himself. Thus he continued, nursed with the closest care and affection by his beloved wife until the end came at 10 minutes to 4 o'clock in the morning of March 12. Mr. Fleming was a man who stood well in the estimation of his fellowmen. He was the soul of honor and honesty. He practically had full charge of the elevator interests of Rankin & Cowden, and the fact that such important interests were entrusted to him year after year speaks volumes for his integrity and trust-worthiness. He had the rare virtue of being a home-lover. Possibly no man living in Riverton was seen less upon its streets and in the lounging places than Francis Fleming. During working hours he attended strictly to business, and his evenings were spent at home with his family. One sister living in Monroe, Wisconsin, and sister lliving in Chicago are the only immediate relatives of his own family who now survive him. The funeral services were held in the home conducted by Rev. Fred Harris. The choir was composed of Miss Rilla Shoemaker, Mrs. Nella Wiliams, Alvin Byrd and Roy Shoemaker. He was buried in the Riverton cemetery by the side of his four children who had already gone on before.

"Death of T.K. Bloom".--The sudden death of Thomas K. Bloom last week at Farragut was great surprise to all of his friends. He had been reading in the drug store of Carl Coleman and started to leave the room and had gotten to the front door when he fell dead. He had been troubled with his heart for several years but did not compain and but few knew of his affliction. Mr. Bloom lived for several years four miles west of Northboro in Page county and then moved to Walnut township, Fremont county, but later gave up the farm and took up his residence in Farragut. He was 72 years of age and a most honorable and honest man. Brief funeral services were held at the home on last Monday morning and then all went to Shenandoah where services were held at the Baptist church of which denomination deceased was a member. Of the ten children all but one were present at the funeral besides numerous grandchildren and other relatives. One daughter, Mrs. Maffett, of South Dakota, was unable to be present. It is understood that Mrs. Bloom will continue her residence in Farragut.

Marcy 26, 1909.--"They Had Met Before".--One never knows what is going to happen and it is doubtful if we ever get out of the world alive. J.C. Shockley of Randolph while in the city Monday afternoon made the Herald sanctum a call as is his usual custom and while resting in the chief editorial chair and perusing some important event of news which greatly absorbed his attention to such a degree that he was oblivious to his material surroundings. Presently J.F. Lewis pulled the latch string and entered and at once began to cull the exchanges for the latest national events. The situation was novel one and from their actions we naturally thought that they were strangers so we advanced for the purpose of giving them the politest twentieth century introduction but such was not necessary as they had met before under far different circumstances and each well remembered the time and place. It was twenty years ago said Lewis, since we met west of Riverton in the capacity of a fishing party and the statement brought such a vivid recollection to Shockley's mind that in an instant he was standing erect and waiting his turn to speak. Such a spectacle carried the reporter back through the pages of history to colonial days when Patrick Henry uttered those immortal words "Give me liberty or give me death." It was now Shockley's inning and he began enumerating the persons who were there and among those were: Dr. Sutton, P. H. Hoop, J. C. Shockely, George Batcheldor, Dr. S.C. Hatton, E. Smith, Prof. Scofield, H. R., Laird, J.F. Lewis, John and Joe Samuels. Then Bro. Shockley told of the great catch of fish and especially did he place emphasis on the experience Prof. Scofield had in securing the spoon bill cat that was taxing the net for its get-a-way, but the man of letters was equal to the emergency in every particular. Lewis then confessed to stealing a boat and rowing it to the farther shore which deprived his companions of crossing the placid waters of the Nishna on their return to Riverton. Such an act under any other condition would have been unpardonable. Dr. Hatton's harness was cemented apart and thrown promiscuously on the high branches of a honey locust tree that stood hard-by the tent. The following morning all things were righted and the event was chronicled in the social ledger.

"Akin-Haselwood".--On Tuesday evening, March 23, at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. T.E. Haselwood, one mile north of Percival, occurred the marriage of their daughter Frances to Guy C. Akin. At 8 o'clock the wedding party consisting of Rev. R.R. Moser, officiating clergyman, Miss Dotta Akin, sister of the groom, who served as bridesmaid, Mr. Bert Toynton, groomsman, and the contracting parties, entered the parlor to the strains of a wedding march played by Miss Helen Morrow. Crossing the parlor they took their places beneath a floral arch, where, in a brief but impressive ceremony, the lives and futures of these two estimable young people were united. The bride wore a dainty gown of Enlgish lawn and carried bride's roses. The groom was attired in black. Immediately following the congratulations the guests were ushered into the dining room where a pleasing supper was gracefully served by Mr. and Mrs. T.P. Haselwood, assisted by Mr. and Mrs. Clark Sheldon, Jr. Many beautiful and useful presents were bestowed as a token of the high esteem in which these young people are held. Among these gifts were a number of very elaborte pieces of drawnwork linen which were sent from New Haven, Conn., by the grandmother of the bride. The bride is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T.E. Haselwood. She has grown to young womanhood in our midst and is well known to be a young lady of pleasing attainments. The groom is the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. T. Akin of Fulton, Kan., who during his stay of several seasons in the vicinity of Percival has proven himself to be a young man possessed of those qualities of character which make and keep each acquaintance a friend Mr. and Mrs. Akin left Thursday for Fulton, Kan., where they will live in a farm home already prepared by the groon, where they will be at home to their friends very soon. Thence they will be followed by best wishes of their many friends in our community, including the Herald..
