    1. Charles Havens, Dec. 31, 1831 - Apr. 21, 1901; Civil War Veteran
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Havens, Tullar (Fullar?), Bowen Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ok.2ADE/1615.1 Message Board Post: THE FREMONT COUNTY HERALD. April 25, 1901. "OBITUARY".--Died--On April 21st, 1901, Chas. Havens, aged 69 years, 9 months and 18 days. Mr. Havens was born in Bridsall, Allegany county, New York, on December 31, 1831, and spent the years of his early manhood in that locality. On December 3d, 1854, he was married in Oramel, Allegany county, to Miss Eliza Tullar (sic), who survives him. On August 13th, 1861, he arrived in Fremont county, locating at Fisher's Grove, otherwise known as Manti, and here remained till the termination of the civil war when he removed to Sidney where he has lived ever since. At an early stage of the civil was he enlisted in the Union service where he remained nearly three years, arriving home after his discharge, on July 2d, 1865. He was a member of the 29th Iowa regiment, company E, of whom our townsman, Henry Bowen, was captain. Mr. Havens was the father of 8 children, 4 sons and 4 daughters; of these, six are still living, two having preceded the father to the world beyond, one son and one daughter. Of the remaining children, two live lin Creston, a son and a daughter, one daughter lives in Omaha, Nebraska, while the other three, one daughter and two sons, live in Sidney. Mr. Havens made a profession of religion in February, 1871, during a revival that took place in Sidney and united with the Baptist church here of which he continued a member until his death, which occurred on last Sunday, at 1:05 p.m. He had been in failing health for a year, but took to his bed a little more than a week prior to his death. The funeral exercises were held at the Baptist church on Tuesday at 2 o'clock p.m. The funeral cortege left the family residence at the tolling of the bell, accompanied by the members of G.A. R. Post, who marched in order to the church, forming outside until the gathered concourse entered the church, when they marched in together, taking their seats on the west side, well forward. We remarked the venerable appearance of this remnant of old soldiers, many of whom were as white with the frosts of years as was their comrade who laid in the coffin. The congregation seated, the choir sang "Jesus Lover of My Soul" followed by the reading of the 15th chapter of 1st Cor., from the 35th verse, by Rev.Dickinson. Prayer was then offered by Rev. Hoff, followed by the singing of "Asleep in Jesus". The address was delivered by the pastor of the church, Rev. Riches, who announced the well known words from Job: "If a man die shall he live again?" The immortality of the soul was the theme announced and the preacher proceeded to present proofs that were most convincing, being drawn from scripture, nature and reason. Among the scriptural proofs was the statement of the Savior to the Saducees who denied the resurrection, when he quoted them the substance of Ex. 3:6-16: "I am the God of Abraham, etc,: and affirming "God is not the God of the dead, but of the living." These old worthies had been dead for centuries, but yet the Savior asserts that they still live. The appearance of the Savior on the mount of transfiguration, with Moses and Elijah was also cited; as likewise, the assertion of the Savior to the thief on the cross, "this day shalt thou be with me in paradise," plainly asserting existence after the perishing of the body on the cross. Of the symbols of the resurrection exhibited in nature, the development of the bird in the egg was noted and described, as also the butterfly from the tiny tomb of the chrysalis. The services all through, including the music furnished by the choir, were fitting, appropriate and impressive and could not fail of a good impression on all present--the one end to be desired in all funeral services. At the conclusion of the exercises at the church the audience filed away to the cemetery where the exercises were concluded and where the body of the deceased was laid away to its final earthly rest.

    1. John Franklin Lewis, early Riverton, Sidney photographer, d. May 20, 1933.
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Lewis, McKean Classification: Death Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ok.2ADE/1657 Message Board Post: THE SIDNEY ARGUS - HERALD. June 1, 1933. "Long Time Resident Is Dead In Montana".--A copy of the Weekly Eagle, published at Ekalaka, Montana, has reached this office telling of the death of John F. Lewis, who was associated with that paper as local editor. "Lewis", as he was generally called here, died suddenly Saturday morning, May 20. He arose from his bed about 2:30 in the morning, very ill, and made his way to the town hospital, just across the street. Dr. Sandy attended him, prescribed medicine and care, and returned to his rest. Shortly afterward a nurse visited the room, found Lewis very bad and again called the doctor, but the patient died before his arrival. Indigestion he called it. J.F. was an orphan boy, born in Wisconsin, self educated. When a young man he came to Riverton where he conducted a photo gallery. Later he came to Sidney and took up work on the old Fremont County Herald as a free-lance correspondent, writing feature articles which he frequently illustrated with his own pictures. Few men were better informed than Lewis. And few worried less about life's problems. He was one man who really cared nothing for the material things of life. Industrious, yes; but any time he would rather spend two days searching historical works for the mere sake of proving his point in an argument than to engage in remunerative pursuits. And he usually emerged victorious. For a number of years he made his home with the J.D. McKean family. Wherever he lived, his room was always piled high with books and periodicals and photos in the most confusing disarray, but Lewis could at any moment lay his hand upon the very thing he wanted, to the utter amazement of those who visited him. Lewis was 75 at the time of his demise. He never married. Some seventeen years ago he went to Montana and for a time lived on a homestead, later drifting back to newspaper work. Not long ago we saw an historical article in one of the leading farm magazines, with pictures by J. F. Lewis. He had photographed W.J. Bryan, who was his idol; Taft, Wilson, and many other world figures, whom he interviewed personally and of whom he wrote entertainingly. J.F. was in a class by himself. There never was another like him. He knew not what it was to hurry nor to worry. He took life as he found it--and he found it good. "Take no thought of the morrow, for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself," wrote St. Matthew. Such was J.F.'s creed. He owed no man, wanted only to be permitted to go his way unmolested, untroubled by the things so many others find troublesome. His beloved Knights of Pythias order had charge of the funeral. May his be lasting peace.

June 1, 1933. "Ranks Are Thinning".--Another of the few remaining civil war veterans, John H. Bachler, passed away Monday, May 29, at his home in Dutch Hollow community after a long illness during which he suffered much but complained not at all. Mr. Bachler was the last of the civil war veterans in the west section of Fremont county, and for years had been a familiar figure on Memorial and other patriotic days. This respected veteran was born February 29, 1848 in Ohio, and lived to the age 85 years and 3 months. He came with his parents when about 8 years old to eastern Nebraska, and in 1880 moved to Fremont county, which has since been his home, except for a few years spent in Oklahoma. Shortly after the close of civil strife he married Martha Bates. To their union ten children were born, two daughters dying in infancy and one son preceding his father by only two years. Those remaining are Andy, who scarcely left his father's bedside during his last illness; Alex of Bartlett; Mrs. Nellie Herker of Thurman; Mrs. Nettie Hindman, Mrs. May Bartles of PacificJunction; Henry who lives in Oregon, and William in California. He also leaves a brother Henry, who came from Whitefish, Montana, to help care for the ailing one two months ago; two sisters, Mrs. Katherin Ward of Chester, Montana, Mrs. Mary Ann Derlith of Oklahoma City. Sunny skies and balmy breezes greeted Mr. and Mrs. P. H. Reed on the occasion of their golden wedding anniversary yesterday, March 1, as if nature was desirous of making amends for snow packed roads which made it impossible for many of their friends and relatives to be present for this happy day. Only those from their old neighborhood along the base line road on the Missouri river bottoms who could reach the paved highway to the south, were able to reach Sidney at all, including their son Roy, and family, who live in Thurman. Also, one daughter, Mrs. J. S. Clanton, of Forest City, Mo. could not get here, for no busses were running from the south. Despite their disappointment, both Mr. and Mrs. Reed were very happy, and enjoyed exceedingly those who made the effort to reach their home in Sidney under such adverse conditions. They dispensed gracious hospitality, and their guests felt repaid for any efforts they had made to get here. It is interesting to note that Mr. and Mrs. Reed, as well as Mr. and Mrs. O. B. Hume, who celebrated their 50th anniversary Monday, lived in the same locality during their 50 years of married life, the Reed's until a year ago living just a short distance from Mr. and Mrs. Hume. Mr. Reed was born in Lee county and came when a small boy with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Reed, to the fertile land extending west from the bluffs toward the Missouri river. The trip was made by covered wagon, and the small Hilburn was much impressed by his trip to the new land. About four years after their arrival, they settled on the old Reed homestead, where they lived and raised their family. Just 50 years ago yesterday at Thurman occurred the marriage of their son, P. H. Reed and Minnie Hoback, who had been born and raised in Cass County, Nebr., but who spent part of her time with a sister, Mrs. Emma Keyser, at Percival. Mr. Reed took his bride immediately to the farm adjoining his father's, where they lived until retiring and moving to Sidney last March 1. Their new home was the Lybe property in west Sidney, and it is interesting to note that Mrs. Lybe, who occupied the property until her death in 1933, had also been born and raised in Lee county, not far from where the parents of Mr. Reed had lived. Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Reed, two of whom, Mrs. Emma Jaeger, the eldest daughter, and an infant, one of twin boys, died. The rest live nearby, and with the exception of those who could not get here because of the drifted roads, were present on this happy occasion. They included Mr. and Mrs. Robert Reed and their daughters, Alene, Marjorie and Winona, and their son Carl of Percival; Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Reed and their sons, Lowel and Donald, Mr and Mrs. Elbert Reed and sons Larry and Warren also from Percival; Mrs. Herman Albright and daughters Rosemary and Mary Jane, and Claire Jaeger, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Reed, from Omaha; and Mr. and Mrs. Ross Reed and daughters Betty (sic...is actually spelled Bettie) and Marilyn, of Sidney. Aldean Reed, friend of Betty(sic) Reed's, but no relation to the family was also present. Others from their former neighbor hood who registered included Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Monaghan and son Jerry, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Snyder and Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Snyder from Percival; and Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Hills of Sidney, who formerly lived on a farm not far distant from Mr. and Mrs. Reed. Mrs. J. D. Hills of Sidney accompanied them. Refreshments, consisting of sandwiches, cake, coffee and candy were served to the guests.
