    1. Sidney's Uncle John Searles and the Burlington route.
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Searles Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ok.2ADE/57.274.1 Message Board Post: THE FREMONT COUNTY SUN. April 4, 1901. "Old Time Cards".--While in conversation recently with our good friend Uncle John Searles, the popular conductor on the "Q" branch, he showed us two souvenirs that money could hardly buy from Uncle John. The first was a time card on the "Q" from Burlington to Council Bluffs, and was an excursion train. It was run to Council Bluffs for the opening of the Ogden House in that city on December 23, 1869. The train left Burlington at 8:30 in the morning and did not arrive at the Bluffs until 10:30 in the evening. On that time card the town of Malvern was then called Milton. C.E. Perkins was then general superintendent, and Daniel Bradley assistant superintendent. Another one of Uncle John's keepsakes was the time card of another excursion from Council Bluffs to Burlington. It was an excursion of Boston capitalists going home from a trip to the coast. The train was made up of Pullman cars, but nothing like the Pullman's of today. On this train a small paper was printed called the "Trans Continental", a copy of which Uncle John has in his possession. This excursion was run on June 29, 1870. The reason that Uncle John values these time cards is that on both trains he was the conductor in charge, and that both excursions were pulled through without an accident and on time. Uncle John has been with the "Q" now about thirty seven years, being the oldest man in the employ of the company in the train service. He hopes that the "Q" will not be absorbed by the Great Northern, as it would be a hard blow to the old veterans in the service. Uncle John has been conductor on the Sidney branch for twenty-two years.

    1. Rural Mail - and - Free Delivery: The NEW ORDER OF THINGS.
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Small town residents NOT included!? Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ok.2ADE/1660.1 Message Board Post: THE FREMONT COUNTY SUN. April 25, 1901. "Rural Mail Delivery".--As an evidence of the increasing popularity of the rural mail delivery it may be stated that there are nearly 500 rural mail route cases pending in Iowa alone, and it is stated upon the very best authority that it will not be many years before every farmer residing upon a main country road will have his mail delivered at his door at least once a day and have his outgoing mail picked up without the trouble of driving to his nearest town to post his letters. As a further evidence of the growing popularity of this system, in many instances farmers have considered it worth their while to offer the government bonuses for the establishment of the routes. The government, however, is not asking for outside aid in the shape of subsidies from anyone. Its only demand is that a sufficient number of patrons shall be found along any proposed route to justify the undertaking in the matter of expense. The expense is small, being, as it is confined to the salary of the carrier, which is only about $30 a month, and out of this he must pay for the maintenance of his horse or team and conveyance of what ever description. Ther are no restrictions by the government as to the kind of conveyance to be used. The carrier may suit himself as to design, cost or other circumstances. It is he that has to pay and it is likely that he will for the present at least try and get along with the cheapest and at the same time, the most convenient vehicle possible. Elaborate affairs for the purpose have been gotten up but in most cases they are altogether too expensive for the remuneration received by the carrier. By and by when the pay of the latter shall be increased he may indulge in what ever luxuries in that respect to which he may feel inclined. Were this new idea in postal matters not meeting with the most gratifying success there would not be so many mail routes under consideration as there are at present in one state alone. Similar good reports came from Kansas, and other sections are also awakened to the new order of things.

Surnames: Eisenhower, Farwell Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ok.2ADE/1664 Message Board Post: THE FREMONT COUNTY SUN. April 25, 1901. "The Family Library".--The library is now within the reach of all classes. Competition between the publishers and the multiplicity of authors has forever banished the day when a small volume was a luxury, and the book stalls have placed treasures of literature where the poor may reach them. The poor in purse may become the rich in spirit. Books are so cheap that they often materialize in the hands of those who love them; and sometimes the possessor hardly knows how or whence they came. So the library has not only become a feature of the home, but a necessity. The collection of books is bound to be made. It comes without effort. There is always room for one more book, and the first thing you know there is caseful, and by and by the case runs over and another case materializes from somewhere. Maybe the family carpenter nails it together, and some one else gives it a coat of paint; later on the books crowd that case; finally there is a roomful, and lo! you have a library. You make room for the books you love.--Haryot Holt Cahoon, in May "Woman's Home Companion". N.B.: Soon after the Eisenhower presidential library in Kansas opened, the first thing a visitor noticed in the home of Ike's parents, was the home library...My grandfather Farwell built his home in Walnut township in 1917; the book cases separated the dining and living rooms!--W.F.

Wolf, of Locust Grove township, were business visitors in Sidney Wednesday, and were getting some administration papers on the estate of George Wolf an old resident, having lived there since 1871, who died about a week ago. Mr. Thayer being a brother-in-law of Mr. Wolf. Mr. Thayer tells us that the farmers are well pleased with the rural mail routes and that nearly every family in the township gets their mail that way. One thing they want is to have the telephone company extend their lines down as far as the old High Creek postoffice. There is a store located there, and it would be a good place for a telephone. Mr. Thayer says the Tabor Company have a line within three miles of this store. It looks as though this company should investigatge this matter.

Do you know if he or family was originally from England then came to US via Canada. Did any relatives live in Ohio...Have you ever heard of Agnes Reed which would have been his step daughter or his wife's daughter or real daughter..Agnes was born June 16, 1889 or 1890. her first husband was supposedly killed Jacques Bernerd StJohn or Johns whom she had her first born son with born about 1915. Agnes was to have had a set of twins who died during the war of England and/or her! mother my greatgrandmother could also have been a twin. Story was told that her grandmother or Aunt died of Lock jaw. Ellen was to be a 'bad-luck' name...Laura was also mentioned as a relative...but I do remember my mother who was born 10/22/1925 in Ava, Illinois, telling me that Margarett was a relative...my mother never met her relatives nor did I meet my grandparents or her halfbrother or sister. My mom and her sister look like twins however, my mom's birth record lists her father as Howard C Koons who would have been born around 187? and Agnes 1889 or 1890. Agnes passed away in Billings, Montana in 1941 September. Agnes' birthday was June 16, I believe I do know it was in June. Her mother (Agnes' mother) was married before to a Libby or first a Reed then a Libby...Agnes was said to have several brothers I don't know about sisters. William, Charles, Thomas and/or John and maybe Charles William Reed in (I thought) Ohio. There was a Brownie that was Howard's best f! riend or cousin or relative who came to the house to announce the death of someone; possibly Howard's death around 30 or give or take a year or two. Please if any of this sounds familiar, please write me Andrade1225@aol.com Thank you, p.s. Howard C Koons if this was his name was from Pennslvania that is what's on my mom's birth certificate.
