He lost this government contract once the powerful and rich Western Stage Coach Company started its stage coach line from Ottumwa to Nebraska City. Its stage coach line on the South Tier was the longest stage coach line in the State of Iowa......If I'm remembering correctly, Matthews also was responsible for the Manti hotel.--W.F.

Napoleon Bonaparte Lucas who lived east of Saint Louis, Missouri, was another such son....G.W. Lucas was in the State General Asembly when he entered the bill which eventually moved the state capitol from Iowa City to Des Moines. Dr. Dewey of Sidney was the senator at the same time, and it was Senator Dewey who was able to muster enough votes for the bill's passage. G.W. Lucas lived in Lacy's Grove, northwest of Sidney, but later moved to Holt county, Missouri.--W.F.
