Surnames: Thomas, Lusby, Gard Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ok.2ADE/1920 Message Board Post: FREMONT COUNTY HERALD. April 5, 1900. "Mortuary Matters". Death of Mrs. Thomas Lusby.--Mrs. Thomas Lusby, whose funeral took place on Wednesday of this week, was married to her husband who survives her, on March 19th, 1858. Mr. Lusby was a native of Lincolnshire, England, and was born on April 6th, 1862 (sic). He was a brick mason and built the first Baptist church of Sidney--that the first brick church erected in Fremont county. He also built the first brick house in Hamburg as well as a large proportion of the brick buildings in Riverton. To Mr. and Mrs. Lusby were born three children two of whom are still living: Geo. W., born Feb. 12, 1865, and Charles W., born Feb. 5, 1860. Mrs. Lusby, the subject of this sketch, came here with her husband (sic) in April, 1841, where there were but two white white families in Iowa west of the Nodaway river, and when the early settlers did their trading and milling in Savanah, Missouri. It is recorded that in one winter they were compelled to beat out their corn to make bread. Mrs. Lusby used to tell of a Mr. Gard, a Christian minister, as being the first preacher in the county, preaching at PLeasant Grove and perfomring the baptismal rite in a small stream near by. Mrs. Lusby is a daughter of Jacob Thomas who brought the first loom to the county and on which Mrs. Lusby claims she did the first weaving. Funeral services were held at Hamburg on Wdnesday of this week and the remains were brought to Sidney to be interred in the cemtery here. A large funeral procession accompanied the remains, arriving at about 12 noon, about one hour in advance of the anticipated time, as mentioned in another place in this issue as explaining why more of our citizens did not meet the concourse at the cemetery.

April 5, 1900.--OBITUARY. Died.--At her home in Sidney township, March 30, 1900, Mrs. Thos. J. Etling, aged 55 years, 10 months and 18 days. Josephine K. Hickey was born in Montreal, Canada, May 12. 1844. and in early life removed with her parents to Joliet, Ill., where she grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage to Wm. Bugher, in 1860 and one daughter was born to them. She was re-married in 1871, to Thos. Etling and came to Sidney, where she lived seven years. Her sisters, Mrs, Kennedy and Mrs. Languein, of Junction City, Kansas, were with her at the time of her death. Her brother, William Hickey, of Independence, Ia., arrived too late for the funeral. She united with the Catholic church early in life and lived in the faith until her death. Her whole life was one of christian faith and good works. It seems strange to see those two names appear in a note of marriage in 1995. Eugene D. Lord was married to my Great Grandmother Eva I. Dunn but they were married in Marion, MO Mar. 1872. They are the grandparents of my grandfather Frederick Eugene Kuhn. And another unusual thing is my Grandfather, Frederick E. Kuhn was born in Sidney, IA. Do you think there is any connection at all?

This was the first time all of the brothers had been together at one time since they had left the parental roof, so the meeting was a happy one. In view of the fact that some came from distances as great as is California from here, the reunion at once takes on a more important aspect. A bounteous dinner was served at twelve o'clock, and those who were present were: Mr. and Mrs. Ike Hickey, George Hickey of Stockton, California; Jess Hickey of Council Bluffs; John Hickey of Thurman; Mr. and Mrs. L.W. Guinotte of Omaha; Mr. and Mrs. John Miller and Clarence Cobert of Sidney; Than Hickey of Sidney; George Keplinger of Council Bluffs, and Mr and Mrs. Warren Booten and family of Sidney. Brothers present were Jess, George, Nath! aniel and Ike Hickey and their sister, Mrs. John Miller made up the family which has so many years been separated and unable to be present at one time. Pictures were taken so as to preserve the moment of the occasion for__future.

I have a Rebeeca Carmen born about 1866 and I believe I found her in the 1880 census in the household of Solomon Carmen, wife Martha and other siblings Marcus, Charly, Thomas and Sarah. Is this the same family your are referring to in your post? If so do you have the parent for Solomon Carmen?
