    1. Burgett(sp?), Taylor, Jones 1872(?) to 1875 in HAMBURG IA
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ok.2ADE/1927 Message Board Post: Seeking any mention or evidence of marriage of Sarah Taylor to John Burgett, (any spelling) about 1872; of the birth of Elijah 1873 and Clara Belle 1875; of any marriage of Sarah Taylor Burgett to James Jones, born England, Nova Scotia, Canada, of any record of his naturalization in 1834. First I have of them is 1880 census in Cawker City KS, at which time James Ellsworth, born Ft. Scott KS and Abraham born Cawker city have increased the household. Sarah presumed to have died 1882, place unknown. James Sr. and Ellsworth are in Indian Territory in 1900. Abraham is in the Spanish American War. Elijah has married Nancy Brumley of Arkansas and Clara has married John Kisner of Butler, MO. Therefore, for a very small window of time John, Sarah, Elijah and Clara were in Hamburg. Tax rolls? newspaper items? I have looked at 1875 census; it is lumped statistics, not households. Any clue as to how to find any information is most welcome. Live near depository, will print Federa! l Censuses if useable to anyone helping. Grace in Alaska

That means he emigrated to California, Oregon County, or maybe he was a Mormon and went to Utah. Come to think of it, he could have gone back to where he came from in Missouri. (I've never read anything about an entire family of having died in early Fremont county history.)--Walter.

Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ok.2ADE/746.1.2 Message Board Post: Karen: The Eugene Lord and wife Eva that I know of lived in Riverton in 1895 and 1896; in Hamburg in 1898 and in 1940, in Spring Valley, San Diego county, California. Their daughter Emma L. Lord married Jones Woodson Estes on Feb. 20, 1895 at Hamburg; Emma (Lord) Estes died May 4, 1920 in Seattle, Washington. Her sister was Ettie J. who married Geo. Will Kuhn on Dec. 31` 1891 who was the son of Frederick and Mary A. (Barbour) Kuhn. Another record I have says that G.W. Kuhn and wife Ettie had a son who was born on Nov. 18, 1898 in Prairie township: "Born to Mr. and Mrs. Will Kuhns of Prairie township, Friday morning, Nov. 18, a fine boy. The little fellow had a hard time Sat. to live, but at this time all are doing well." Oh yes, the FREMONT COUNTY HERALD of January 7, 1892 carried this bit: "Riverton.--Wm. Kune (sic) and Miss Lord, a niece of Mr. Dunn's, were married at the residence of Mr. Dunn, Thursday evening. Dec. 31, Rev. Washburn, of Mt. Pleasant officiating. Mr.Kune is one of Prairie township's best young men and Miss Lord is a charming young lady. We wish the young people all the happiness the constitution of the United States grants any newly married couple and we are here to assist in making their life still more happy." A note from the Herald of Jan. 7, 1892 reads: "Riverton.--Mr. Phillips and Miss Stella Kune (sic), of Prairie township, were married at the residence of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kune, a short time since. Let joy go unconfined is our prayer." A note from the Herald of Feb. 20, 1902 reads: "Riverton.--Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Jones W. Estes, Tuesday, at 1:30 p.m., a fine male son of the usual proportions. All as happy as the company who sat under the Juniper tree years and years ago. May they grow and get fat, live long to ripe old age and die happy." (This was their son Eugene Burnett Estes, born Feb. 18, 1902 at Riverton.).....Mrs. Jones Woodson Estes died May 4, 1920 at Seattle, Washington. A notice I have, dated 1940, says she was the daughter of Eva I Lord, 87 years old, of Spring Valley, San Diego county, California. (The Estes family had discovered Estes Park, so well known in Colorado, later sold out and some returned to Fremont county, and then moved to Seattle.) Besides Jones Woodson Estes, there was Louella C. (Estes) Hatton, wife of Dr. Hatton, the correspondent from Riverton to the Sidney Herald, and that is probably the reason for so much information being in the Riverton news in that paper. The Fremont County Herald of October 5, 1899 says: "Mrs. Fred Kuhn of Prairie township, was stricken suddenly Friday afternoon with apoplexy and died at 9 a.m. the following day, never regaining consciousness. The funeral took place Sunday afternoon. She was buried in the Farragut cemetery. The family have the sympathy of everyone, as she was well known to all and a good woman." I have another clipping from the Herald: "Fred Kuhn Laid to Rest.--The remains of Fred Kuhn who died in Seattle, Washington, on September 27 were brought to Farragut and there on the 5th inst., were laid to rest in the cemetery of that place. The funeral was from the Christian church and conducted by the pastor, Rev. Branic. Deceased had reached the age of 84 years, 4 months and 7 days. He came to Femont county in 1874 and for many years was a resident of Prairie township. Two daughters and one son are left to mourn the loss of a kind and honorable father besides many friends and neighbors who join these in sympathy."

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/ok.2ADE/746.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Hi. Thank you for the very descriptive email about the area where my Grandfather was born and grew up. It sounds like a very nice place. But I AM a little confused....and please forgive me but I'm kinda new at this geneology stuff. Needless to say, I was quite surprised to see both of my great great grandparents names attached to the marriage article in your posting. And it prompts me to clarify what I know and ask you a few questions if I can. Eugene D. Lord and Eva I. Dunn were my paternal Great Great Grandparents. Their daughter Etta Lord was my Great Grandmother, and she bore a son, Frederick Eugene Kuhn who was my Grandfather.....I don't have a compiled list of siblings for any of these family members, at least not yet. My Grandfather, Frederick was born in Sidney, IA, Oct. 2, 1895. He died at the age of 58, and is buried in San Diego, CA. He was a deaf mute, and at some point in time moved to San Diego, CA. I am not sure when he left Iowa but he married Emily Helen Westbrook from Montanna, and they lived in LaMesa and Spring Valley, CA. Emily died in 1964, and there are no family records of any sort. They had one daughter, Verda Marie Kuhn who was my Mother. I have located another Frederick Kuhn who apparently was born in 1824. Married to Mary, with a son George W. Kuhn. born approx 1864. Other children as of the 1880 census are: Sarah D., Emma S. and William Kuhn. Now my Grandfather's father (my great grandfather) was named George W. Kuhn and he married Etta Lord. The 1880 census shows a George W. Kuhn, aged 16 which would fit with what I suspect is my great grandfather, because I show him as born in 1864. It is possible that the Frederick Kuhn you speak of is my Great Great Grandfather, and I show him as being a farmer in Prarie, Fremont, IA (excerpt from the 1880 Census). Do you know when he died, approximately? Any other family members that you might know about or recall. Maybe there are still some in the area? And do you know the name of the child that died that you mentioned in the news clipping? Any information you may have about anyone in the Kuhn or Lord families would be greatfully appreciated.... my email address is wilcoxke@aol.com if you would like to communicate directly. Thank you for all your help so far..... it's nice to know someone that knows something about some of my elusive family members. Karen E. Wilcox

    1. Frederick Kuhn; Nishnabotna Trace, Nishna Valley; South Tier
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Kuhn, Van Sant, Woods, Phillips Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ok.2ADE/746.1.1 Message Board Post: The reason for the erroneous 1995 date is that my fingers wanted to see if you were awake. All ten knew that they were supposed to type in "1895", but they at times are mischievous...And if you believe that, I have "some ocean-front property in Arizona...."...etc... My parents moved to Prairie township in 1930, one and one half miles south of the old Frederick Kuhn farm; John and Lena VanSant were living there then (southeast quarter of section 23 township 69 range 41). It was half a mile east of Mt. Hope country school, and, in the eastern part of what had been called the Nishna Valley neighborhood. John VanSant died in 1946, and soon after that I "painted" Lena's house. That consisted in being sure I covered up the thin spots--no scraping, finishing touches or anything like that! The house could be described as a large one and a half story "T", sitting on the north side of the road with the cross bar to the east, and with a large screened-in porch on the southwest corner. The farm buildings stood on a small hill, and a short distance north of them, Prairie Creek crossed the farm. There was water in it most of the year, and that was probably the reason why the pasture and meadow was just north of the barn, encompassing the creek. I attended Mt. Hope school in the early 1930, and well remember coming home through the "Van Sant" neighborhood where there were wild strawberries growing along side the road. This bit of wild prairie was destroyed when the farm -to- market road replaced the old one, whose road bed was far below the general surface of the surrounding country side. The strawberries grew on the banks, and were as good as they are now reported to have been. You can see this part of southwestern Prairie township just before going down into the West Nishnabotna Valley from atop the bluffs east of Sidney. Look straight east to the low rolling loess hills which follow along the east side of the Nishna Valley. The Frederick Kuhn farm was just a bit north of straight east. The first pioneers of Fremont county were aware of the Nishnabotna Trace which followed the ridge which these hills afforded, between the East Nishnabotna River and Walnut Creek. This trail was used by the Indians who lived on the west side of the MIssouri river, who were in the habit of using the Nishnabotna Trace while going to their hunting grounds located on the Des Moines River around and north of present Des Moines, Iowa...Did you ever hear of any archaeological artifacts that the Kuhn's had found? I see that Frederick Kuhn was buried in Farragut. That means that although they attended church in Nishna Valley, they must have turned southeast and traveled the South Tier State Road whenever they went shopping. The Van Sant's bought the Kuhn farm about a year before Frederick's death, so I suppose they moved into Farragut shortly before? I have one clipping you might be interested in: THE FREMONT COUNTY HERALD. 3/15/1888.--Mrs. Fred Kuhn recently received the sad news that while her daughter was enroute for Riverton with her two children, they both took very sick and the youngest died in the vicinity of Syracuse, Nebr., while the other is dangerously sick. William Kuhns took the train this morning for Syracuse.--Mt Hope News.....I don't know whether that was the Wood's family or the Phillips.--W.F.
